About the opportunity
Surrey Steels is a growing steel business looking for an experienced Welder/Fabricator to join our busy Croydon operation.
This is a skilled, hands-on role for someone with genuine steel-industry welding and fabrication experience. You will be responsible for preparing, fabricating, assembling and welding steel components accurately from drawings, job sheets and specifications.
We are looking for someone who can confidently take a job from initial material preparation and fabrication through to completed welding and finishing. You must take pride in your workmanship, understand the importance of quality and safety, and work effectively as part of a busy production team.
Key responsibilities
- Read and interpret fabrication drawings, welding details, job sheets and specifications.
- Confirm that the correct materials, dimensions, components and instructions are available before starting work.
- Measure, mark out, cut, drill and prepare steel components.
- Prepare joints by cleaning, bevelling, aligning and securing materials.
- Fabricate and assemble steelwork accurately to the required drawings, dimensions and tolerances.
- Check joint alignment, dimensions and fit-up before welding.
- Select the correct welding process, equipment, consumables and machine settings.
- Carry out MIG, MAG, MMA or other welding processes for which you are trained and competent.
- Produce welds that meet the required specification, size, position and quality standard.
- Control distortion and maintain component dimensions throughout fabrication and welding.
- Carry out grinding, finishing and approved corrective work where required.
- Complete dimensional and visual quality checks on fabricated and welded components.
- Identify and report drawing discrepancies, material defects, fabrication errors and welding problems.
- Correct defects and complete approved rework when instructed.
- Keep components correctly labelled, identified and traceable throughout production.
- Report mistakes or non-conforming work promptly rather than passing it to the next production stage.
- Complete job sheets, inspection records and other required production paperwork.
- Protect completed components while they are awaiting movement, collection or delivery.
- Maintain fabrication and welding tools and equipment in good working condition.
- Work closely with saw operators, yard employees, supervisors and quality personnel.
- Provide accurate progress updates and report potential production delays promptly.
- Minimise avoidable material waste, consumable use, damage and rework.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe working area.
Health and safety responsibilities
- Follow fabrication drawings, approved welding procedures, risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Use fabrication and welding equipment only when trained, competent and authorised.
- Use welding screens, extraction, guards and all other required safety controls.
- Wear the correct PPE, including suitable eye, face, hand, hearing and respiratory protection.
- Inspect welding equipment, leads, torches, regulators, guards and extraction systems before use.
- Report defective equipment immediately and prevent unsafe equipment from being used.
- Store and handle gas cylinders, welding consumables and flammable materials correctly.
- Maintain fire precautions and check the surrounding area for ignition risks.
- Follow hot-work permit requirements where applicable.
- Handle steel using the correct lifting equipment and safe manual-handling methods.
- Keep work areas, access routes and emergency equipment clear.
- Stop work and immediately report unsafe conditions.
Skills and experience required
- Previous professional welding and fabrication experience within the steel industry.
- Competence in MIG, MAG, MMA or other relevant welding processes.
- Ability to read and work accurately from fabrication and engineering drawings.
- Strong measuring, marking-out, cutting, drilling, fitting and assembly skills.
- Good understanding of weld preparation, fit-up, alignment and distortion control.
- Ability to fabricate steelwork accurately to specified dimensions and tolerances.
- Ability to produce consistent welds to the required quality standard.
- Experience using fabrication, grinding and finishing equipment safely.
- Strong attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
- Good understanding of workshop health-and-safety requirements.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of assigned jobs.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work effectively as part of a production team.
- Relevant welding qualifications, codings or recognised fabrication training would be advantageous.
