About Us

West Sussex Alternative Provision College (WSAPC) is an educational establishment based across the county on seven separate sites, providing education for pupils whom are permanently excluded, at risk of exclusion or too ill to attend school.

Our ethos is to provide FOCUS (Future, Opportunities, Curriculum, Us, School) for our pupils to re-engage them in their learning and support re-integration to mainstream provision.

Job Details

We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Psychologist to assist in the educational and social development of pupils via direct work with children, young people and their families.

Plan and deliver appropriate support to school staff, families and children.
To provide support for pupils inside and outside of the classroom enabling them to fully participate and access learning.
Contribute to the development of a safe and stimulating learning environment.
Be a key member of the Curriculum Access team.
Collate, analyse and present data to relevant groups.
Provide feedback, including contributing to written reports and formal meetings when required.

Key Accountabilities

Use consultation and assessment skills to identify children, young people and families’ needs for further assistance and refer this to the appropriate colleagues
Plan, Manage and implement Interventions, such as; Play therapy; CFT; CBT; mindfulness; psychoeducation
Support staff/child reflective debriefs
Undertake Psychological assessments as necessary
Implement Functional behaviour analysis/ Positive behavioural support
Oversee the development and use of documents and tools such as; BSPs, Boxall Profiles, Risk Assessments, ABC charts.
Assist the teacher with the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour/Support/Mentoring plans
Assist in the supervision, training and development of staff
Take a lead role in managing and delivering pastoral support to pupils
Attend to pupils’ personal needs and provide advice to assist in their social, health & hygiene development
Establish productive working relationships with pupils, acting as a role model
Provide information and advice to enable pupils to make choices about their own learning/behaviour/attendance
Challenge and motivate pupils, promote and reinforce self-esteem
Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress, achievement, behaviour, attendance, etc.
Support pupils’ access to learning using appropriate strategies, resources, etc.
Monitor and evaluate pupils’ responses and progress against action plans through observation and planned recording
Provide objective and accurate feedback and reports as required, to other staff on pupils’ achievement, progress and other matters, ensuring the availability of appropriate evidence
Manage record keeping systems and processes using Bromcom
Take lead role in the development and implementation of appropriate behaviour management strategies
Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers, exchanging information, facilitating their support for their child’s attendance, access and learning and supporting home to school and community links
Determine the need for, prepare and use specialist equipment, plans and resources to support pupils
Attend Clinical Supervision

What You Need to Succeed

Qualifications and Knowledge

A good standard of education across a range of subjects
GCSE (or equivalent) pass at Grade C or above in English and Mathematics
An Honours degree in Psychology, or a recognised equivalent qualification, which provides Graduate Basis for Registration with the British Psychological Society.
A passion for modelling therapeutic practice to enable young people to succeed
Understanding of the complexities of the application of psychology when working with children, young people and families
The ability to inspire, challenge and motivate, working with anxiety to overcome challenges
The confidence, skills and abilities to support school teams
Excellent communication skills with high levels of emotional intelligence, resilience and flexibility
Ability to promote reflective thinking in teams
The ability to work collaboratively as a member within a professional multi-disciplinary team
A responsive, highly approachable attitude and the ability to support your colleagues in this challenging yet rewarding environment
Be excellent practitioners with high expectations of all pupils
Be passionate about child-centred learning
Have excellent organisational and communication skills and enjoy working in a team
Be able to make a positive contribution to the ethos of our school
Have a firm commitment to inclusion and equal opportunities for all
Full working knowledge of relevant polices/codes of practice/legislation
Working knowledge of national curriculum and other relevant learning programmes

Other Requirements

Able to travel independently to various locations around the county which may not be easily accessible by public transport.
