Reporting to the Lead Design Engineer, the successful candidate will take full ownership and responsibility for a variety of complex engineering projects. Using an analytical approach alongside a high attention to detail to engineering design, they will take ownership of designing and developing mechanical, composite, and hydraulic systems, from concept through to design, testing, and implementation onto the car.
Design and development of a variety of mechanical, composite, and hydraulic systems on the car
Integration of these components into the overall car package
Mass tracking predictions on a timely basis
Collaboration with the structural team for part optimisation, with the use of Catia FEA to support your own designs
Delivery of innovative design solutions that support the team's goal to maximise performance and minimise mass
Consideration for structural, functional, packaging, manufacturing, cost, and reliability requirements
Working in synergy with other departments, producing optimised design solutions to achieve the highest levels of performance and reliability
Generation of 3D models, assemblies and 2D drawings, including the definition and documentation of manufacturing information
Support in the definition and management of performance and reliability lab testing programs for relevant designs & projects
Reliability management of assigned systems throughout component life cycle, and in support of the team’s reliability function
Close collaboration with internal and external manufacturing departments to ensure fully integrated designs achieving optimal car performance.
Understand and drive cost effective design solutions
Other tasks and projects as required to achieve the overall Applied Science objectives
Deploy new manufacturing methods to reduce mass and lead time of design or manufacture

Essential skills and experience:
Mechanical, automotive, or aeronautical degree (2:1 minimum grade) or similar.
Proven in-depth understanding of mechanical design and its application with a solid understanding and appreciation of engineering first principles.
A detailed knowledge of modern materials and manufacturing processes
Experience of Catia V5/3DX solid modelling and surfacing design and kinematics would be beneficial.
Use of finite element analysis tool and shape optimisation (ideally with Catia V5/3DX packages) alongside hand calculation methodologies to produce reliable and optimised designs is a significant benefit.
Excellent communication and collaborative skills to ensure cross departmental integration
High attention to detail and the ability to work under limited supervision to tight deadlines
