Courts and Telephone Support Volunteer

Various locations available: Newcastle, Teesside, Durham and Newton Aycliffe.

Purpose of the Role

The main aim of the Connect to Court project formerly the Support at Courts Service is to provide a visible presence in court giving support, reassurance and information to families. To raise awareness of, and promote the services that NEPACS offers and provide emotional support and information for families of defendants /prisoners who are facing anxiety, confusion and stigma. Families of defendants /prisoners often say they feel isolated in the community and lose their confidence in coping with changing circumstances This might include sharing general information about the prison and visiting arrangements or allowing a family member time to ‘off-load’ about concerns they may have along with working with probation, courts staff and legal representatives.

Volunteers will also offer a Telephone Support Service aimed to help individuals at whatever stage of the process they are at, to build up their confidence by providing a listening ear and, where appropriate, encouraging them to seek help from other services both within Nepacs and from external agencies. The Listening Support role involves the volunteer listening to and supporting an individual who is going through the difficult experience of having someone close to them either involved as a defendant, in the criminal justice process, or, serving a prison sentence. The volunteer will listen to the families’ concerns and support and encourage them on their journey.

Volunteers will work under the supervision of the Connect to Court Co-ordinator or the Connect to Court project worker throughout the north east and have an understanding of and a commitment to the objectives of NEPACS

The Role of the Court and Telephone support Volunteer:

· To provide onsite cover at a Crown and or Magistrates court for one or more sessions with the Telephone Support Service.

· To deliver support in an empathic and non-judgemental manner.

· To work with family to help them identify their individual needs, to build confidence and self-esteem so they can become competent to navigate their changing circumstances.

· To identify family needs and signpost for additional support if required.

· To scrupulously observe confidentiality and maintain professional boundaries

· To answer incoming calls from service-users in a prompt and “professional” manner.

· To make “follow-up” calls at the agreed time to families who are in need of ongoing support.

· To complete accurate referral records and case notes on each contact with a family member.

· To complete entries in the “call-back diary” to ensure families are contacted pro-actively as agreed.

· To contribute to service monitoring by the completion of case studies and data collection forms.

· To notify the service manager of any difficulties in the relationship with service users and seek advice on how these should be resolved.

· To attend training sessions and volunteer review meetings and complete all other necessary administrative tasks.

Skills/ Experience/ Qualities:

· To have an understanding of the needs of families of prisoners and defendants.

· To have broad understanding of support services available within local community.

· To have the ability to communicate confidently with a wide range of people.

· To be reliable, pro-active and be able to work well independently and be non-judgemental.

Availability: -To commit for a minimum period of six months.

· To share responsibility for courts and telephone Support enquiries/follow-up calls within the Courts Project

· To be available to attend training, support and development sessions.

Support: NEPACS offers to all volunteers- Initial training and induction to the role and on-going learning and support
