Job Title: Mobile Field Service Engineer – Refuse Vehicles & EVs

Location: Mobile / Field-based M4 corridor London

Reporting to: Service Manager / Engineering Manager

Job Purpose

The Mobile Field Service Engineer is responsible for the on-site servicing, repair, diagnostics, and commissioning of refuse collection vehicles (RCVs), bin lifters, and electric vehicle (EV) systems. The role involves working independently at customer depots and roadside locations, ensuring vehicle uptime, safety, and compliance while delivering a professional, customer-focused service.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out planned servicing, inspections, and preventative maintenance on refuse vehicles
Diagnose and repair faults on:
Refuse bodies (e.g. Olympus, Elite, NTM or similar)
Bin lifters (e.g. Terberg, Dennis Eagle, Omnidel, Trade)
Hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
Support EV refuse vehicles, including:
High-voltage safety awareness (where trained)
12/24V auxiliary systems
Fault diagnosis with OEM diagnostic tools
Attend breakdowns and emergency call-outs at customer depots or roadside locations
Remove, repair, replace, and commission components including pumps, valves, rams, looms, sensors, and control systems
Complete LOLER-related inspections and identify safety-critical defects
Liaise directly with customers, depot managers, and drivers to explain faults and repairs
Accurately complete job cards, service reports, and parts usage via digital systems
Ensure all work complies with health & safety, PUWER, LOLER, and company procedures
Maintain the service van, tools, diagnostic equipment, and stock
Provide technical feedback to the service office and engineering teams

Skills & Experience Required

Proven experience working on refuse vehicles, HGV bodies, bin lifters, or heavy plant
Strong fault-finding skills across hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
Experience working independently in a mobile field service role
Confident using diagnostic equipment and interpreting wiring diagrams and hydraulic schematics
Understanding of safety-critical systems on RCVs
Good communication and customer-facing skills

Qualifications & Training

Essential:

NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, Automotive, or HGV Engineering
Full UK driving licence
Good level of IT literacy, with the ability to confidently use and learn computer systems and software.

Desirable:

HGV Technician qualification
LOLER inspection experience
EV / High Voltage Awareness or OEM EV training
Manufacturer training (Dennis Eagle, Terberg, Mercedes Econic, Volvo, DAF, etc.)
Working knowledge of CODESYS, with the ability to review and interpret PLC code for diagnostic purposes (no programming required).
