Overview
We are seeking an experienced Head Greenkeeper who will be responsible for the management, maintenance, and presentation of the golf course to championship standards. Working closely with the Club Manager and Greens Committee, the post holder ensures the course is consistently presented to a high standard that meets member expectations, supports competitions, and enhances the club’s reputation.
Key Responsibilities
Golf Course Maintenance & Presentation
- Maintain greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, rough, and practice areas to a high standard suitable for year-round play
- Deliver consistent putting surfaces with a focus on speed, smoothness, and true roll
- Plan and execute seasonal agronomic programmes (aeration, fertilisation, topdressing, over seeding)
- Prepare the course for competitions, match days, and events
- Manage bunker quality, hazard definition, and general course aesthetics
Member & Golf Experience
- Ensure course conditions meet member expectations and enhance playing experience
- Communicate regularly with members regarding course works, closures, and conditions
- Balance presentation with playability in varying weather conditions
- Respond professionally to member feedback and course-related queries
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, motivate, and manage the Greens team
- Allocate daily and weekly work schedules based on priorities
- Train and develop staff, apprentices, and assistants
- Conduct performance reviews and maintain high working standards
- Promote a positive, professional team culture
Machinery & Workshop Oversight
- Manage the maintenance, servicing, and replacement planning of all course machinery
- Ensure machinery is used safely and efficiently
- Liaise with external suppliers and service providers where necessary
- Maintain accurate service and maintenance records
Irrigation, Drainage & Water Management
- Oversee irrigation systems to ensure efficient and effective water usage
- Monitor moisture levels across the course, particularly greens and tees
- Identify and implement drainage improvements where necessary
- Adapt water management strategies based on weather and seasonal demands
Budget & Financial Responsibility
- Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget in line with club objectives
- Control costs relating to fertilisers, chemicals, fuel, and labour
- Source products and services competitively while maintaining quality
- Provide regular budget updates to management or committee
Compliance, Health & Safety
- Ensure full compliance with health & safety legislation and club policies
- Maintain COSHH records and safe chemical handling procedures
- Ensure safe working practices for all staff
- Promote environmental stewardship and sustainable course management
Course Development & Projects
- Work with the Club Manager and Greens Committee on long-term course development plans
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
- Proven experience in golf course management or senior greenkeeping role
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Sports Turf / Golf Course Management
- PA1, PA2, PA6 spraying qualifications
- Strong understanding of fine turf management, particularly greens
- Leadership and team management experience
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable
- Level 4/5 qualification or degree in Turfgrass Management
- Experience preparing courses for competitions or tournaments
- Budget management experience
- First Aid certification
- Relevant machinery or specialist certifications

Pay: Up to £50,000.00 per year
