Full job description

Job Purpose

To lead the catering service across Silver Birch Dementia Day Centres by providing nutritious, freshly prepared meals that meet the dietary, nutritional and individual needs of older adults and people living with dementia.

The Catering Manager will oversee all aspects of food preparation, food safety, menu planning, stock management and compliance, ensuring an outstanding dining experience whilst maintaining the highest standards of hygiene and customer service.

They will also support the wider objectives of Silver Birch by promoting dignity, choice, wellbeing and independence through high-quality food provision.

Key ResponsibilitiesFood Preparation

Plan varied, balanced and seasonal menus suitable for older adults and people living with dementia.
Prepare fresh, nutritious two-course lunches for approximately 20-30 clients daily.
Cater for specialist dietary requirements including:
Diabetic diets
Soft and pureed diets
Allergies and intolerances
Vegetarian and cultural requirements
Produce high-quality meals that are appetising, nutritious and visually appealing.
Prepare desserts and refreshments where required.

Batch Cooking

Prepare meals for additional Silver Birch centres.
Portion, label, cool and freeze meals safely in accordance with Food Standards Agency guidance.
Maintain freezer stock levels to ensure continuity during annual leave or sickness.
Ensure food quality is maintained throughout transportation.

Menu Planning

Produce rotating seasonal menus.
Consult with clients and families where appropriate regarding food preferences.
Create and display daily menus.
Monitor meal feedback and continuously improve the catering offer.

Food Safety & Compliance

Maintain a 5 Star Food Hygiene Rating.
Ensure full compliance with Food Safety legislation and HACCP procedures.
Complete:
Daily temperature records
Cleaning schedules
Food safety documentation
Allergy records
Stock rotation records
Ensure all food is stored, labelled and handled correctly.
Lead kitchen audits and inspections.

Purchasing & Stock Control

Order food and kitchen supplies within agreed budgets.
Shop for ingredients where necessary.
Monitor stock levels.
Minimise waste through effective stock rotation.
Maintain supplier relationships.

Kitchen Management

Ensure the kitchen remains clean, organised and fully compliant.
Manage equipment maintenance and report faults.
Ensure all cleaning schedules are completed.
Oversee waste disposal and recycling.

Leadership

Supervise and support any staff required.
Delegate daily tasks.
Train new staff in food hygiene and kitchen procedures.
Promote a positive and supportive working environment.

Person SpecificationEssential

Level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene (minimum)
Experience cooking for large groups
Knowledge of special diets
Excellent organisational skills
Good time management
Understanding of food allergens
Ability to work independently
Full UK driving licence

Desirable

Level 3 Food Safety
Experience working within health or social care
Experience cooking for older adults
Knowledge of dementia-friendly dining
First Aid awareness

Hours - Monday to Friday 8am-2pm

Pay: £14.76 per hour
