Calderdale strives to develop our community to improve the local economy. Within Calderdale the Youth Justice Service is a statutory service working with young people aged between 10-18 who are subject to statutory court, out of court disposals orders or preventive support.

The principal aim of the youth justice system is to prevent offending by children and young persons; pursuing our vision of a Child First youth justice system by providing intervention that tackles the factors that put the young person at risk of offending (personal, family, social, educational or health) and strengthening their ‘protective factors’. We aim to treat children fairly and prevent harm through exploitation.

The Youth Justice service consists of three pods, each led by a Practice Manager who provide support to a team off workers, case managers, and specialists. You will also work closely with colleagues across the council and partner agencies to ensure best outcomes for children and families in our caseload. Creating sustainable positive changes, while safeguarding victims and the community.

We are looking for a practice Manager, with proven leadership skills, passionate about Youth Justice to provide supervision, to case managers, workers and specialist staff employed by YJS and seconded to the service, to ensure a high standard of practice and to assist in the formulation, and successful implementation, of agreed intervention programmes with young people and their families. The Youth Justice Service aims to reduce first time entrance to the service, reduce offending by children and young people, from an strength base approach, looking at the “Child First”.

The successful candidate will have a relevant vocational qualification in Social Work, Youth and Community, Probation, Teaching children aged 10-18 years of age or a Degree in Youth Justice and have the ability to handle complex and challenging situations and be able to identify and manage risks, including the risks and needs of vulnerable children and young people with very complex needs.

Relevant / Current knowledge relating to criminal Justice and Inspection frameworks would be beneficial. Proven ability to use IT packages including standard Microsoft Office software and be able to work under pressure and keep systems updated.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate strong organisational and communication skills and be familiar with budget monitoring and collaborative working. Current knowledge of inspection framework and Victim work expectations is desirable.
