QSD Fire Systems
Location: North Wales
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £38,000 – £45,000 per year, dependent on experience
About QSD Fire Systems
QSD Fire Systems is an established and growing fire protection company operating throughout North Wales, the North West and surrounding areas.
We specialise in the design, installation and maintenance of residential and domestic fire sprinkler and water mist systems, alongside a growing range of fire protection services.
As the business continues to grow, we are looking for a technically minded Fire Suppression Design Engineer to take ownership of our sprinkler and water mist design work.
We are particularly interested in candidates with experience in mechanical design, building services, HVAC, plumbing or M&E design who are confident reading construction drawings and have excellent attention to detail.
The Role
This isn't simply a CAD position.
You will be responsible for understanding the technical requirements of each project and ensuring that the systems we design are appropriate, compliant and practical to install.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Producing fire sprinkler and water mist designs using AutoCAD 2D
- Reviewing architectural, M&E and fire strategy drawings
- Establishing the correct design criteria for each project
- Selecting appropriate sprinkler heads and equipment
- Ensuring correct sprinkler positioning, coverage and spacing
- Producing hydraulic calculations using specialist software
- Reviewing available water supplies and determining system requirements
- Assisting with pump, tank and equipment selection
- Producing technical drawings and information for installation teams
- Checking designs before they are issued for construction
- Liaising with clients, consultants, contractors and our installation teams
- Maintaining accurate design records and project documentation
- Ensuring designs comply with relevant British Standards and project specifications
What We're Looking For
The most important qualities for this position are technical ability, accuracy and attention to detail.
We are looking for someone who doesn't simply follow a process, but who questions information, identifies potential problems and checks that their work is technically correct before issuing it.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience using AutoCAD 2D
- Experience within mechanical, building services, M&E, HVAC, plumbing or fire protection design
- The ability to confidently read and interpret construction drawings
- A good understanding of mechanical systems and pipework
- Strong numerical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- The ability to manage several projects simultaneously
- Confidence communicating with clients, contractors and engineers
- A methodical approach to checking their own work
Experience designing fire sprinkler or water mist systems would be a significant advantage, but we are prepared to provide specialist training to the right mechanical design engineer.
Training Provided
You do not need previous experience using our hydraulic calculation software.
QSD uses Canute for hydraulic calculations, which is straightforward to learn for someone with the right technical background.
Full training will be provided covering:
- Fire sprinkler and water mist design principles
- Relevant British Standards
- System categories and design criteria
- Sprinkler selection and positioning
- Hydraulic calculations
- Water supply requirements
- Pumps, tanks, valves and associated equipment
- QSD design standards and procedures
- Canute hydraulic calculation software
We are more interested in finding someone with the right technical mindset than someone who already knows every aspect of sprinkler design.
Career Development
This is an important position within QSD and offers the opportunity to take increasing responsibility for the company's fire suppression design function.
For the right person, the role can develop into a senior position responsible for:
- Technical oversight of suppression designs
- Design checking and approval
- Developing QSD's standard design procedures
- Supporting and mentoring junior designers
- Working with the management team on technically challenging projects
- Helping develop the company's wider technical capabilities
Why Join QSD?
QSD is continuing to invest in its technical and service capabilities, creating opportunities for people who want to develop their careers as the company grows.
You'll be joining a practical, experienced team where your designs don't simply remain on a drawing — you'll be able to work closely with the engineers who install and commission the systems you design.
