Job Title: Cook (Nursing Home)

Job Summary:

The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, appetizing meals to residents in a nursing home setting. This role ensures that all meals meet dietary requirements, food safety standards, and the individual needs of residents, while maintaining a clean and organized kitchen environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Prepare and cook meals according to planned menus and dietary guidelines (e.g., low-sodium, diabetic, pureed diets).
Ensure food is prepared in a timely manner and served at appropriate temperatures.
Follow residents’ specific dietary restrictions and portion requirements.
Maintain high standards of food hygiene and comply with health and safety regulations.
Monitor food inventory and assist with ordering supplies as needed.
Store food properly to prevent spoilage and contamination.
Clean kitchen equipment, utensils, and work areas regularly.
Assist in menu planning in collaboration with dietitians or management.
Ensure compliance with relevant food safety laws and nursing home policies.
Accommodate special requests or cultural dietary needs where possible.

Qualifications and Skills:

Previous experience as a cook, preferably in healthcare, hospitality, or institutional settings.
Knowledge of special diets and nutrition for elderly residents.
Understanding of food safety and sanitation standards (e.g., HACCP).
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Good time management and organizational skills.
Strong attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Food hygiene certification (required in many regions).

Working Conditions:

Shift work, including weekends and holidays.
Standing for long periods and working in a hot kitchen environment.
Interaction with elderly residents and healthcare staff.

Personal Attributes:

Compassionate and patient, especially when serving elderly individuals.
Reliable and punctual.
Good communication skills.
Respectful of residents’ dignity and preferences.
