Job Details

Job Title - Assistant Service Manager

Department - All

Reports To - Care Manager

Location - Campus / Community Based Services

Hours - Rota – 5 / 7 including day shifts / backshift / weekend work

Job Purpose

The Assistant Services Manager (ASM) will support the delivery of high-quality residential childcare and support services for children and young people. The postholder will promote positive educational, health, and wellbeing outcomes through trauma-informed and relationship-based practice, ensuring that children and young people remain at the centre of all planning and decision-making processes.

The ASM will work collaboratively with colleagues, families, education staff, and external agencies to provide safe, nurturing, and supportive environments that reflect organisational values and current legislation, policy, and best practice guidance.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Extensive experience within residential childcare settings
Proven ability to support children and young people to achieve positive education, health, and wellbeing outcomes
Experience of working collaboratively with families and external agencies
Knowledge and understanding of:
GIRFEC
National Care Standards
SSSC Codes of Conduct

Key Responsibilities

Care Planning and Practice

Ensure effective care planning processes are implemented and understood by staff teams
Support outcome-focused planning through the Side-by-Side process
Promote and embed:
Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)
Trauma-informed practice
GIRFEC principles
The National Practice Model
Ensure children and young people remain central to assessment, planning, and review processes
Maintain accurate, high-quality records and case files

Supporting Young People

Work collaboratively with education staff to raise aspirations and improve educational outcomes
Promote extended learning opportunities and holistic development
Support staff understanding of children’s plans and agreed strategies
Develop positive relationships with children, young people, families, and partner agencies

Team Working and Leadership

Promote collaborative and cohesive working practices across teams
Provide guidance, mentoring, and supervision to colleagues
Support staff development and reflective practice
Contribute to quality assurance and service improvement activities

Safeguarding and Compliance

Ensure all safeguarding policies and procedures are adhered to
Promote the health, wellbeing, safety, and security of children, young people, and staff
Maintain awareness of current legislation, policy, and regulatory requirements

Areas of Responsibility

(Dependent on stage and level of ASM role)

Responsibilities may include:

Rota planning and service efficiencies
Identified quality assurance activities
Absence management in line with organisational procedures
Health and Safety audits and inspections
Participation in service reviews
Staff supervision and development
Budget accountability
Duty management responsibilities
On-call responsibilities
Recruitment and selection of staff

Qualifications & Experiance

Essential Qualifications

The successful candidate must have:

Registration with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC)
SVQ Level 4 in a relevant discipline, or be working towards completion within the SSSC registration timeframe
Knowledge and understanding of practice informed by Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Desirable Qualifications and Skills

The following are desirable:

Degree qualification in a relevant discipline
Psychology qualification
Full driving licence
Counselling skills
SVQ Assessor Award
