Join Our Team
We are looking for a friendly, reliable, and customer-focused Coffee Shop Assistant to join our Facilities Management team at HMP Altcourse. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a fast-paced catering environment and takes pride in delivering outstanding customer service.
As a Coffee Shop Assistant, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operation of the visits coffee shop, ensuring customers receive a welcoming experience while maintaining the highest standards of food safety, hygiene, and security.
You will be responsible for serving hot and cold refreshments, maintaining stock levels, operating the till, completing food safety documentation, and ensuring the coffee shop remains clean, safe, and welcoming for customers.
HMP Altcourse serves the courts of Merseyside and the wider North West, maintaining strong community links with a clear focus on rehabilitation and resettlement. We provide high-quality services that support individuals to make positive changes, offering a wide range of education, training and work opportunities to help residents develop practical, work-ready skills. Our commitment to reducing reoffending continues beyond custody through community partnerships that support people on release. The prison includes multiple residential units, a healthcare centre, gym, library, workshops, visits hall, chaplaincy and kitchen.
What You'll Do
Key Responsibilities

Serve hot and cold food and beverages to customers.

Deliver excellent customer service at all times.

Prepare and stock the coffee shop in line with company planograms.

Collect stock from the main kitchen and replenish supplies as required.

Heat food and beverages ready for service.

Complete food safety documentation, including temperature records and food journals.

Follow HACCP, health and safety, food hygiene, and company procedures.

Rotate stock effectively to minimise waste.

Assist within the staff restaurant and support special events when required.

Carry out cleaning duties and complete opening and closing checks.

Open, lock, and secure the coffee shop in line with security procedures.

Operate the till accurately, process transactions, and balance cash at the end of shift.

Manage waste and recycling in accordance with company procedures.

Handle customer queries and complaints professionally.

Complete required training and maintain high standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
What We're Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience

Experience operating a cash till and handling cash transactions.

Ability to count, balance cash, and provide correct change.

Basic understanding of food hygiene and food safety practices.

Strong customer service skills.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Ability to identify the required standard for a task and complete work accordingly.

Commitment to following health and safety procedures.

Willingness to work appropriately within a prison environment.

Reliable, professional, confidential, and security conscious.
Desirable

Ability to work independently and use your own initiative.

Previous experience in a café, coffee shop, retail, or catering environment.
