Caretaker - Little Edenhurst Nursery
Responsible to: Nursery Manager and Executive Nursery Manager
Hours: Part-Time, 25 hours per week, all year round
To commence: Monday 3rd August 2026
As Little Edenhurst's Caretaker, you will play a vital role in the smooth operation of the site by maintaining and managing the safety, cleanliness, security and facilities.
You will work under the direction of the Nursery Manager and Executive Nursery Manager to ensure the Nursery meets its compliance requirements and is a well maintained environment.
Personal Requirements
- A hardworking, reliable, honest, dependable, self-motivated person.
- Previous experience in a caretaker, site or facilities management position, such that you are familiar with maintaining a premises to a high level.
- Conscientious, proactive and alert so that you can fulfil the safety requirements involved in looking after a school site.
- Competent and capable of independently undertaking general DIY repairs and maintenance.
- Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and the ability to implement them effectively.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and good communication skills to interact with staff, students, and external contractors.
- Have a willingness to undertake professional development training and certifications.
- A valid, clean driving license would be advantageous, but is not essential.
- Working pattern to be discussed and agreed upon. There is flexibility to spread your hours out over the week or condense the days.
- This role is all year round and will require you to work during school holidays.
Job Description: Caretaker
Safety of the Site
- Be responsible for on-site checks on both school sites, in conjunction with the Nursery Manager and Executive Nursery Manager.
- Maintain accurate records of all issues and make regular inspections, reporting back to the Nursery Manager and Executive Nursery Manager.
- Complete routine checks and schedule maintenance for equipment (such as fire alarms, extinguishers, emergency lighting etc.).
- Maintain accurate COSSH logs and conduct risk assessments as required.
- You may be called out at unsociable hours or at weekends to deal with security problems, make emergency repairs or allow access to any contractor who may be working on site in nursery holidays or weekends.
- Register as a key holder and be a point of contact in an emergency call-out situation, responding and taking appropriate action to emergency call-outs outside normal working hours, such as for intruders, fires, floods etc.
Site Maintenance and Management
- Carry out daily ad-hoc repairs, maintenance, replacement, and removal work as required.
- To be responsible for the cleanliness and tidiness of the paths, drives and other hard surfaces within the grounds, including jet washing surfaces and some general upkeep gardening and weeding.
- Liaise with the Nursery Manager and Executive Nursery Manager to oversee or carry out all onsite maintenance, and check all work has been completed to expected standards.
- Maintain, regulate and ensure the heating, lighting and water systems within the buildings are working effectively and safely, to include monitoring and settings of heating controls and boilers.
- Liaise with cleaner re the cleaning of the Nursery on a regular basis and confirm deep cleans over the holiday periods.
- Keep communal areas tidy and safe, addressing and dealing with any hazards.
- Read Gas, Electric and Water meters as required.
- Change batteries, light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as required.
Health and Safety Management
- Water hygiene and Legionella monitoring.
- Fire safety checks, to include weekly checks on all call points, emergency lighting, emergency door checks, alarm record keeping.
- Effective general good housekeeping and upkeep of the site's common areas.
- Make safe any hazards and ensure that the area is cordoned off where necessary.
- Sweet outdoor areas, pick up litter and be responsible for the removal of all debris from paths, play areas, grassed areas, flowerbeds and entrance, to include keeping hard surfaces free of moss and weeds.
- Keep paths and entrances free of ice and snow to ensure the safety of children, parents, staff and visitors.
- Carry out minor repairs to property, fixtures, fittings and equipment.
- Drawing the attention of the appropriate authorities, via the Nursery Manager and Executive Nursery Manager, to any repairs or maintenance work, which is beyond the competence and responsibility of the Caretaker.
- General porterage duties, assembly of furniture and assisting with moving furnishings such as shelves, storage units, display boards, desks etc.
- Assisting nursery staff with appropriate simple tasks as requested.
- Ensuring that rubbish or hazardous waste is disposed of appropriately.
General Duties (applicable to all roles in the Nursery)
- Maintain confidentiality regarding information related to individual children's home life and disclose it only on a "need to know" basis.
- Uphold the Nursery's behaviour code and promote high standards of behaviour.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs of the children.
- Communicate effectively and courteously with staff, parents and visitors.
- Present a positive personal image, contributing to a welcoming school environment that supports equal opportunities for all.
- Actively participate as a supportive member of staff, engaging in nursery activities, and undertaking other duties and responsibilities related to the post requested by, and deemed appropriate by, the Nursery Manager and Executive Nursery Manager.
