Full job description

Job Overview

Christchurch Medical Practice is seeking a highly organised and motivated Medical Secretary to join our team. This is a key administrative role providing essential support to our GPs, Practice Manager, and wider healthcare team.

You will be responsible for delivering an efficient and accurate secretarial service, ensuring smooth communication and high-quality patient care support in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Duties

Provide audio typing, copy typing, and word processing support (letters, reports, referrals, etc.)
Process and maintain electronic referrals (e-Referral system) and manual referrals
Manage incoming and outgoing telephone calls, handling queries professionally
Maintain and monitor internal task systems and clinic systems
Support the Practice Manager with general administrative duties
Ensure accurate filing systems (electronic and paper-based)
Chase and track referrals to ensure timely patient care
Assist with data collection, audits, and reporting
Maintain office supplies and stationery
Provide administrative cover during staff absence when required

Essential Skills & Attributes

Excellent organisational and time management skills
High level of accuracy and attention to detail
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work in a busy, fast-changing environment
Professional, friendly, and approachable demeanour
Strong understanding of confidentiality and data protection
Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Essential Experience & Qualifications

Experience dealing with the public (face-to-face and telephone)
GCSEs (or equivalent), including English and Maths
Strong keyboard and audio typing skills

Desirable

Previous experience in a GP surgery or NHS environment
Experience in a medical or healthcare secretarial role
Knowledge of NHS systems (e.g., referrals, coding, data entry)

Pay: From £12.71 per hour

Work Location: In person
