Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Research and Innovation Department is looking for an experienced Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and Participation (PPIEP) professional with excellent communication and people skills, someone who is empathetic, confident and with an open mind, experienced in working with senior professionals and the public.
Working closely with the Involvement and Inclusion Lead and other members of a friendly and supportive team you will form part of the leadership for delivering PPIEP and increasing its effectiveness within the Research and Innovation Department
You will be responsible for leading the PPIEP training and resources for public contributors and researchers. You will work closely with researchers and public contributors to design and deliver PPIEP training and resources. You will also work closely with PPIEP leads regionally and nationally collaborating on training programmes, best practice and peer support.
The Nottingham Research and Innovation PPIEP Strategy (2026-2031) is currently being developed but will build on our existing strategy. The post-holder will develop and lead training for researchers, registered clinical research staff and public contributors.

The post holder will be responsible for oversight and management of a small team leading the PPIEP programme of work.
The post-holder will develop and deliver inclusive PPIEP training and resources to public contributors and researchers.
Delivering to a diverse range of public contributors, the post-holder will provide support to enable meaningful involvement in health and care research. With a particular focus on under-served communities, the post-holder will advise on appropriate training methods, materials and support for people to be fully involved.
The post-holder will also work closely with academic and clinical researchers at different career stages to ensure a robust understanding and confidence to embed PPIEP in their research. This includes developing and delivering training and resources in the principles of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and how it applies to PPIEP.
The postholder is responsible for ensuring that PPIEP training is delivered collaboratively with partners. They will maintain and develop links and collaborative working with local partners, including the NIHR infrastructure across the region, other BRCs, public contributors and PPIE groups.
The role will also support public involvement groups, including online and in person meetings.
Key relationships will include: patients and public partners, NIHR Nottingham infrastructure teams, local and regional researchers, senior NHS managers and R&I leads.

Build on the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Research PPIE Strategy to develop and implement relevant PPIEP training and EDI action plans and policies.
- Adopt quality improvement principles to ensure PPIEP training is evaluated and improved according to the needs of researchers and PPIE contributors.
- Ensure that all the components which constitute R&I PPIEP initiatives work effectively and deliver tangible benefits to patients and researchers.
- Seek opportunities for collaborative working with other organisations locally, regionally and nationally.
- Write progress reports, with excellent attention to detail, on training metrics and outcomes, using qualitative and quantitative data.
- Represent NUH R&I at relevant conferences, networks and events, sharing best practice with, and learning from, other relevant organisations.
- Maintain awareness of current and potential future relevant PPIEP policy development and innovation and provide briefings to the NUH R&I management team via the operational management meetings and formal reports.
- Keep the R&I management team and wider staff regularly informed of the results of user involvement feedback activities, and of the associated action plans, preparing formal reports and seeking their approval as required.
- Produce detailed reports and other documents, requiring skills in PowerPoint, Excel and Word.
- Work without direct supervision and act autonomously on PPIEP activities.
- Comply with Data Protection legislation and the Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s information governance and patient/public confidentiality policies and take account of these when writing and publishing events and marketing data.
- Occasionally work out of hours (evenings and weekends) as required to deliver and support corporate activities and to represent NUH R&I and associated infrastructure at external events and networks.
- Support and deputise for the Research Involvement and Inclusion Lead as necessary in relation to PPIEP activities
- Management of a small team leading on PPIEP programme of work
- Undertake routine administrative duties to support R&I on key projects as required.
