Full Time / 37 Hours Per Week / Permanent

A new and exciting role within the Homelessness Service within the Housing Division, working in our Temporary Accommodation Team. The team is committed to delivering a customer-focused service that supports vulnerable households to maintain their accommodation and move towards longer-term housing solutions. No one day is the same in this fast-paced team but it’s a supportive environment who works alongside colleagues across Housing, Revenues & Benefits, and external partners such as the Department for Work and Pensions.

This is a full time, permanent position working 37 hours per week Monday to Friday. You’ll have flexibility in hybrid working being both office based, at the Dawn Centre or working remotely from home to suit the needs of the service. However, under our New Ways of Working Policy you’ll be required to work a minimum of 3 days from a non-home location. Additionally, you’ll be expected to travel across the city to conduct home visits to vulnerable households.

What you’ll be doing

Within this role, you’ll primarily work with households who are homeless and residing in temporary accommodation and will be responsible for maximising income for the authority by creating and terminating rent accounts, collecting ineligible rent, and monitoring Housing Benefit claims.

You’ll manage temporary accommodation rent accounts from initial set-up through to closure, ensuring records are accurate and up to date. A core part of this will be collecting accommodation charges and actively recovering any outstanding arrears, while working with residents to agree sustainable repayment arrangements.

In addition, you’ll monitor Housing Benefit and Universal Credit claims and support residents in resolving any issues that may impact their payments. This will include carrying out affordability assessments and providing income maximisation advice to help maintain tenancies.

Working directly with households, including conducting home visits, to discuss rent accounts and offer tailored support. Where necessary, you’ll take appropriate action if repayment agreements are not adhered to.

This will require you to collaborate closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure residents receive holistic support, and maintain accurate records to support reporting on income collection and overall performance.

Overall, you’ll play a crucial role in ensuring the council maximises income while also helping households sustain their temporary accommodation and access the financial support they are entitled to.

What you’ll need

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to bring experience of working within housing, homelessness, income management, welfare benefits or a similar customer-focused environment, along with the confidence to manage complex or sensitive situations, including working with challenging customers in a professional and empathetic way.

A good understanding of Housing Benefit, Universal Credit and/or rent account management will be important, alongside the ability to communicate clearly, negotiate effectively and problem-solve in a practical, solutions-focused way.

You’ll be someone who can work independently and manage a varied caseload within a busy service, using your own initiative while remaining organised and resilient under pressure. We’re looking for a compassionate and enthusiastic individual who is passionate about supporting homeless people and vulnerable households, and who is committed to delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service. The ability to coordinate or manage a team, or show clear potential to do so, will also be valuable in this role.

Additionally, experience of working with vulnerable people, particularly in supporting individuals within temporary accommodation to sustain their tenancies, would be highly beneficial and will help you make an immediate impact.

Due to the nature of this role, you’ll be subject to a Enhanced DBS check.
