About Us:

THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF KAKOLI’S PASSION AND DRIVE

Children’s Services in Westminster City Council is a world of extraordinary stories. Where inspirational people like Kakoli are dedicated to encouraging everyone they work with to be the very best they can be.

Ever since she was a child, Kakoli has believed that children are the ones who’ll change the world for the better. Who’ll create the future we all wish for. And she always knew her calling was to get on the front line and help those who might not be as fortunate as herself.

Driven and passionate about making a difference, she first joined Westminster as a Social Work Assistant, and her managers immediately saw she had huge potential, so they encouraged her to apply to study for a degree in social work. She passed with flying colours, and over the next fourteen years worked as a frontline Social Worker, a Senior Social Worker, a Deputy Service Manager and is now one of our Service Managers.

Kakoli’s vision is as clear now as it was all those years ago – to encourage and support children, and help them grow in safe, vibrant communities. Her achievements are many, but she’s most proud of the fact that these days Westminster doesn’t ‘do things for families’ but ‘does things with families’. And she believes this huge but subtle difference to the way we work has allowed thousands of children in Westminster to fulfil their potential and live their dreams.

The Role:

As a Family Navigator within our small and friendly team, you can make a powerful contribution to Westminster’s success. Working alongside multi-agency professionals, you will be the first point of contact for families seeking advice and support through our Family Hub. You will take a proactive approach to engaging families who may not visit the Hub but could benefit from our services, by arranging home visits, visiting schools, and working closely with GPs.

As a key link between families, the community, and our services, you will help develop a deeper understanding of local needs and identify opportunities to improve the support we provide. Often acting as the first point of contact for families, you will play an important role in ensuring they receive the right help at the right time.

Building and maintaining a detailed understanding of the services available, and using a Whole Family approach to assessing needs, you’ll coordinate meetings with relevant networks of professionals, and participate in the development of the plans we put in place for families who need support. Always taking a planned and structured approach to your work, you’ll also be committed to consulting empathetically with the members of the families you work with before making any referrals.

Your ultimate goal will be to ensure families’ voices are heard and their members are empowered to develop confident, self-reliant and independent lives. It goes without saying that you’ll have a strong focus on safeguarding and follow the relevant procedures when making referrals, and in addition to undertaking the timely and accurate recording of your work, you’ll also participate in training, supervision, appraisal and your own continuing development.

About You:

To be a success in this important role you should have well developed experience of family support work in a paid or voluntary capacity, a good understanding of the issues affecting families in diverse inner city communities, and practical knowledge of child development and well-being. Your compassionate interpersonal and communication skills will allow you to develop a strong rapport with families in challenging circumstances, and you’ll also be ready to build positive relationships with a wide range of professionals and community partners.

Possessing the skills to engage with parents and children from a wide range of backgrounds, including those who are hard to reach, we’ll expect you to have a good command of written and spoken English, and working knowledge of another language spoken in our communities would be useful. You should also have a good understanding of the Early Years Foundation Stage and Early Years Outcomes, an appreciation of the needs of children and young people with SEND, and the processes used to ensure they receive appropriate levels of support.

It’s important that you have a good awareness of the wider needs of parents, including their access to employment and the barriers which may prevent this, and be capable of creating plans of action that identify positive outcomes for the families you work with. A confident user of IT and the Microsoft suite of software, a first level degree or relevant qualification relating to family support, health, education or social care would be desirable.
