Job Description

Commis Chef – Hornsbury Mill Hotel, Chard, Somerset

Hornsbury Mill is a stunning Grade II-listed historic watermill set in five acres of beautiful landscaped gardens with a lake and fountains in the heart of the Somerset countryside.

We are looking for a motivated and ambitious Commis Chef to join our kitchen team and work under our celebrated Head Chef.

This is a rare opportunity to learn and develop your culinary skills in a supportive environment while gaining valuable hands-on experience at a popular wedding, events and boutique hotel venue. You’ll work with fresh seasonal produce and be exposed to restaurant service, weddings, private functions and Sunday roasts — all under the guidance of an experienced and respected Head Chef.

Key Responsibilities

Assist the celebrated Head Chef and kitchen team with food preparation and cooking
Prepare vegetables, stocks, sauces and mise en place to a high standard
Support service across the Wheel Room restaurant, weddings, events and functions
Maintain excellent standards of cleanliness, hygiene and kitchen organisation
Learn new techniques and follow recipes under expert guidance
Help with stock control and minimising waste
Work as part of a small, friendly team in a fast-paced but supportive kitchen

About You

Some previous kitchen experience is preferred (as a commis, kitchen porter looking to progress, or from culinary training)
Strong passion for food and a genuine desire to learn and grow
Reliable, hardworking and eager to take on new challenges
Good basic understanding of food hygiene and safety (Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate is desirable or willingness to obtain it quickly)
Flexible with shifts — including early mornings, late evenings, weekends and event days
Positive attitude and a real team player

Desirable

Previous experience in a hotel, restaurant or events kitchen
Interest in developing skills in wedding and function catering
Eye for detail and presentation
