Job overview

The Specialist Nurse for Children Looked After works in collaboration with partners from Health and Social Care settings. Through professional engagement, the Specialist Nurse for Children Looked After will ensure that children in Care receive the appropriate services to reach their full potential, as outlined in Promoting the Health and Wellbeing of Looked after Children (2015), Working Together to Safeguard Children (2026) and demonstrate competencies outlined in the Intercollegiate document (2025) Safeguarding children and young people & children and young people in care: Competencies for health care staff.

Main duties of the job

To work as an active member of the Children Looked After and Safeguarding team.
Responsible for undertaking the statutory review health assessments for all CLA in Kingston/Richmond within a 20 mile radius using agreed assessment tools.
Attending multi-disciplinary and multi-agency meetings to represent the Children Looked After team, for example MISPER, Pre-MACE, discharge planning meetings and strategy meetings.
Impart specialist Children Looked After, safeguarding and statutory knowledge and guidance to all staff in regard of children, young people, and adults at risk.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

Registered Nurse with current UK NMC registration in Children’s, MH or LD nursing And Evidence of ongoing professional development in safeguarding issues
Masters level education or equivalent specialist skills in CLA and safeguarding (in line with the Intercollegiate document).

Desirable criteria

Health Visiting / School Nursing professional qualification, with entry onto the 3rd part of the NMC Register/mental Health Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria

Experience of working with highly vulnerable children & young people in a range of settings or safeguarding capacity
Experience of carrying out assessments of a CYP development and identifying where further investigation, assessment or escalation may be required
Experience of multi-agency working arrangements

Skills

Essential criteria

Demonstrates expert interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
Ability to work co-operatively and manage conflict within the multi-agency arena.

Knowledge
