Overall Purpose
The Additional Learning Support and Safeguarding Coach will deliver high-quality learning, wellbeing and safeguarding support to apprentices, learners under 18 and vulnerable adults. The role supports learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to access education, develop independence and achieve their full potential, while also contributing to the effective delivery of Hays Travel’s safeguarding function within the apprenticeship team.
Working closely with Learning & Development Coaches, the Safeguarding Lead and wider business teams, the post holder will ensure that learning, welfare and safeguarding needs are identified early, responded to appropriately and managed in line with legislation, policy and best practice.
Key Responsibilities
Learning Support and SEND Provision
- Support Learning & Development Coaches in delivering apprenticeship training by providing in-class support and targeted interventions for learners with SEND.
- Work with individual learners or small groups, tailoring support in line with EHCPs, Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and neurodiversity support plans.
- Provide one-to-one support to apprentices with complex learning, wellbeing or additional needs, promoting independence, confidence and self-esteem.
- Conduct a robust initial assessment with apprentices at the start of the pro-gramme to create a suitable Additional learning support plan where needed.
- Deliver monthly support sessions for learners with neurodiversity plans and contribute to ongoing reviews of learner progress.
- Use inclusive teaching strategies, resources and assistive technologies to engage learners and remove barriers to learning.
- Encourage positive behaviour and contribute to a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Safeguarding and Learner Welfare
- Manage safeguarding incidents, concerns involving apprentices, under 18s and vulnerable adults.
- Recognise and assess risk, ensuring high-risk cases are escalated immediately to the Safeguarding Lead.
- Respond appropriately to safeguarding disclosures, concerns or indicators of risk in line with safeguarding and Prevent Duty guidance.
- Act as Safeguarding Lead during periods of absence, where required.
- Monitor alerts from Smoothwall or other safeguarding systems and take appropriate action.
- Manage consent processes for apprentices and colleagues under 18 attending events.
- Communication and Multi-Agency Working
- Maintain regular communication with Learning & Development Coaches, the Safeguarding Lead, Head of Apprenticeships and other key stakeholders.
- Provide guidance and advice to colleagues on how to respond appropriately to safeguarding or welfare concerns.
- Liaise with parents/carers and external agencies including Police, Social Services, Ambulance Services and other professionals as required.
- Attend safeguarding meetings, case reviews and multi-agency discussions; take minutes and chair meetings when required.
- Work collaboratively across departments, including Learning & Development, HR and Retail teams, to support learner safety and wellbeing.
Record Keeping and Administration
- Maintain accurate, confidential and up-to-date records of learner progress, interventions, safeguarding incidents and welfare concerns.
- Ensure all safeguarding documentation is completed and stored in line with company policy and data protection requirements.
- Prepare and organise learning and support materials to support effective delivery of training and interventions.
Professional Practice and Development
- Engage in continuous professional development to maintain up-to-date knowledge of SEND, OFSTED, safeguarding legislation and best practice.
- Work flexibly across locations and departments as required to meet organisational and learner needs.
- Comply at all times with company policies and procedures, including safeguarding, Prevent, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection.
- Uphold and promote Hays Travel SMILE values in all aspects of the role.
- Undertake any other duties that fall within the scope and responsibility of the role.
Essential Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience
- Empathy and a genuine desire to support young people and vulnerable adults.
- Experience working with children, young people or vulnerable adults, particularly those with SEND or at risk of harm.
- Experience in an educational, apprenticeship, learning support or safeguarding role.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage sensitively across a range of audiences.
- Ability to assess risk, manage incidents and prioritise workload effectively under pressure.
- Strong understanding of safeguarding legislation, child protection processes and Prevent Duty guidance.
- Strong organisational, record-keeping and time-management skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
- Relevant qualifications in education, childcare or learning support.
- Detailed knowledge of specific SEND conditions and effective support strategies.
- Experience using assistive technology to support learning.
- Designated Safeguarding Officer training (Level 3 or above).

- A DBS check and satisfactory employment references are required.
