Position: Mental Health Peer Support Workers

Rotherham Peer Hub x 2 Posts

Salary: £26,227.50

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week

Line Manager: RAW People Lead Peer Support Worker

Reporting to: RAW People Lead Peer Support Worker & RDASH Team Manager

Location: Rotherham based (RDASH, RAW People and Community)

We are a Peer Support organisation created in Rotherham in 2021, we work alongside people to provide lived experience, opportunities and space. Supporting people through early intervention, shared empowerment and understanding of recurring and serious mental illness. As a community we stand by our values that people are Recognised, Accepted & Worthy of opportunities and support to improve their Mental Health & overall wellbeing in a non-clinical pathway.

The Role of a Peer Support Worker

You will spend part of your working week within the hub, in the community and within a range of identified teams within RDaSH. You will assist people to develop and access support in their local community. It could mean the development of Peer Support Group sessions and working with individuals to create their own recovery plan. You will provide support and recovery guidance to individuals experiencing common and severe mental health problems, using your own life experience of mental distress or as a carer and recovery as a template.

· Use your lived experience to build an understanding and trusting relationship with people where you together towards recovery approaches holistically

· Advocate for people from a lived experience perspective.

· Act with the individual’s needs at the forefront at all times.

· Maintain own wellbeing through seeking support, taking regular breaks and prioritising care of your own mental health.

· Work flexibly to empower individuals with aspects of social development.

· Develop meaningful ways to engage with people with communication difficulties.

· Provide practical and regular support to Peers and carers in various community settings, with a focus on socially inclusive activities and recovery. Such activities may include supporting Peers towards their daily living activities and attending Mental appointments.

· Provide hope to people through peer support and education based on lived experience of having a mental health condition.

As a Peer Worker you will employ your own experience to work alongside people in an equal partnership on their journey towards independent and fulfilling lives.

Main Duties

· Work directly with people, on an individual and/or group basis managing your case load

· Participate in supervision and support from the RDASH Clinical and Peer Support Team at RAW People.

· Attend the teams MDT’s to discuss patient care planning from a Peer perspective.

· Provide regular and practical support to Peers and their support system.

· Educate the clinical team on what you feel could be helpful for a person’s recovery, based on your own lived experience.

· Provide information on physical health promotion, e.g. smoking cessation, healthy eating, exercise, and support Peers to participate in relevant groups/ activities.

· Assist and support the Clinical RDASH Team when there is an identified need for peer support for their patient

· Support Peers no longer requiring support to gain experience in this field of practice and improve uptake of employment for people who have experienced a mental health condition.

· Have knowledge and understanding of Rotherham Community services and groups to signpost people to increasing meaningful activity and community engagement.

· Electronically record and report back fully on activities undertaken and alerts others in the care team to any issues that arise during the activities.

· To work alongside practitioners in the team to facilitate a peer support group and to offer a lived experience element to this group to instill hope into patients recovery journey

· Being aware of signs and symptoms of a person’s relapse and report back to the clinical team.

Personal Specification

Essential

Excellent communication skills – written & verbal
Lived experience of Mental Health Service use (patient or carer)
Knowledge of NHS Mental Health Services
Experience of working with isolated people that need support to overcome barriers
Knowledge of Mental Health illnesses and challenges that may be faced
Understanding of Peer Support and Personal Recovery approaches.
Awareness of managing self harm.
Awareness of substance misuse.
Experience of Safeguarding (Adults/Children)

Desirable

Knowledge of the locality (community groups, services and the demographics locally)
Experience of working with people in both 1:1 and group situations
Experience of working with external agencies and services to develop excellent working relationships.
Ability to travel across the town.
