Full job description

Do you thrive in a people‑focused role and love helping others make the most of their day outdoors? We’re looking for an enthusiastic and confident Welcome Manager to lead our visitor‑facing team across some of the most iconic landscapes in the Lake District - including Langdale, Ullswater, Windermere and Coniston.

As the public face of the National Trust in these valleys, you’ll inspire your team to deliver a warm, memorable welcome for every visitor and drive commercial income to support our conservation work. Internally, you'll be known as a 'Welcome Manager (Band 1)'.

Salary: £29,000 per annum

Contract Duration: Permanent

Working Hours: 1950 hours per year. This role is based on annualised hours, where the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. You may work more hours during our peak busy season, and fewer hours in the Winter.

Working Pattern: A typical day is 8.30am - 4.30pm. Regular weekend working and working during school holidays are a requirement of this role. We would be willing to consider part-time hours for the right applicant.

What it's like to work here:You’ll be leading our Welcome Team across a landscape that stretches from the shores of Ullswater to the southern tip of Windermere and out to the Langdale Pikes. These valleys, lakes and fells form some of the most uplifting scenery in the country, drawing millions of visitors every year.

Many people spend an entire day on National Trust land without realising it - and we want to change that. Your leadership will help us connect visitors with the stories, places and people that make the Lakes special, turning a good day out into a great one.

Growing support for the National Trust through car park income, fundraising and membership recruitment is key, as it helps grow our supporter base and raises important funds to help deliver our conservation goals.

What you'll be doing:As the operational lead for our welcome offer, you’ll be responsible for:

Day‑to‑day management across multiple sites, including line management of a small team, duty management and visitor welcome
Driving membership growth, fundraising and commercial success
Leading and motivating your team to deliver exceptional welcome and service
Recruitment, workforce planning and supporting staff development
Monitoring performance, meeting targets and ensuring compliance
Sharing the work we’re doing to protect the Lakes and helping visitors understand how their support makes a difference

Who we're looking forThis is a hands‑on, visitor‑facing role - perfect for someone who loves the outdoors, enjoys working with people and wants to help others discover the best of the Lakes. We'd love to hear from you if you can demonstrate:

Experience of driving commercial targets and delivering high standards of customer service in a busy operational environment.
Previous leadership or line management experience including supervising, coaching and training.
Competency in managing budgets to maximise sales, income and control costs.
Experience of assessing and managing risk.
Knowledge of Health & Safety and compliance requirements.
