Trainee Streetworks / Permit Coordinator

Location: Suffolk
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £25,000–£28,000 per year, depending on experience

About the Role

We are looking for a Trainee Streetworks / Permit Coordinator to join our growing team.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is organised, confident and keen to develop a career within the highways, utilities and construction industry.

Previous streetworks or permitting experience is not required, as full training will be provided.

You will learn how to coordinate permits and notices for works taking place on the public highway and will work closely with our operational teams to ensure works are properly planned and authorised before our teams attend site.

The role would suit someone with previous administrative or coordination experience who is looking to progress into a more specialised position with greater responsibility.

What You'll Be Doing

As you develop within the role, you will be trained to:

Prepare and submit streetworks permit applications.
Monitor permit applications and their progress.
Manage permit dates, deadlines and conditions.
Assist with permit variations, extensions, cancellations and amendments.
Ensure the correct permits are in place before works commence.
Update streetworks systems accurately and within required timescales.
Communicate permit requirements and restrictions to supervisors and operational teams.
Liaise with local authorities and highways teams.
Assist with planning upcoming works and identifying potential permitting issues.
Monitor live works and ensure permits are updated when circumstances change.
Assist with notices and registrations following completion of works.
Maintain accurate records of permits, notices and correspondence.
Work closely with our Traffic Management, Operations and Project teams.
Help prevent permit breaches, missed deadlines and unnecessary charges.

As your knowledge and experience increase, you will be given greater responsibility for managing your own workload and permits.

What We're Looking For

You do not need previous streetworks experience to apply.

We're more interested in finding someone with the right attitude and ability to learn.

You should be:

Highly organised and able to manage multiple tasks at once.
Accurate with good attention to detail.
Confident using computers and learning new systems.
Comfortable working with spreadsheets, emails and online systems.
Confident communicating by telephone and email.
Able to work to deadlines.
Comfortable working in a busy environment where priorities can change quickly.
Willing to ask questions and learn.
Able to take responsibility for your own workload once trained.
A good communicator who can work with both office and operational staff.

Previous experience within administration, coordination, scheduling, planning, construction, highways, utilities or telecommunications would be beneficial but is not essential.

Training & Development

Full training will be provided.

You will develop knowledge of:

Streetworks permitting and noticing.
NRSWA and the Traffic Management Act.
Highway authority permit schemes.
Street Manager and other streetworks systems.
Traffic management requirements.
Planning and coordinating highway works.
Working with local authorities.
Our telecommunications, highways and civil engineering operations.

The intention is for the successful candidate to develop into a fully competent Streetworks / Permit Coordinator.

The Person

This role will suit someone who wants more than a basic administrative position.

There is a lot to learn, but for the right person it provides an opportunity to develop specialist knowledge that is highly relevant across the utilities, telecommunications and highways industries.

We are looking for someone who is proactive, dependable and interested in understanding why things need to be done rather than simply processing paperwork.

You will receive support and training, but as you develop we would expect you to become increasingly independent and take ownership of your responsibilities.
