Working pattern

The initial fixed working pattern is:

Wednesday: 9:20am–4:20pm
Friday: 6:20am–2:20pm
Saturday: 8:20am–1:20pm

Following successful completion of the required training and probationary period, there may be an opportunity for the successful candidate to increase their hours and progress into a full-time Travel Consultant role. Any increase in hours will be subject to business requirements, satisfactory performance and separate agreement; it is not guaranteed.

About the role

We’re looking for a friendly, reliable and customer-focused Travel Consultant to join our team at Bishop Auckland Railway Station.

As one of the first points of contact for passengers, you’ll provide a warm and professional welcome while helping customers plan journeys, purchase the right tickets and access accurate travel information. You’ll sell National Rail tickets and other travel products, assist passengers during disruption and help ensure that everyone visiting the station receives an excellent standard of service.

This is a varied, hands-on role combining customer service, travel advice, retail sales, cash handling and practical station support. Alongside serving customers, you’ll help keep the Travel Centre, waiting room, station frontage, platforms and customer facilities clean, safe and well presented.

You’ll receive training in our ticketing systems and operating procedures, so previous railway experience is not essential. What matters most is that you enjoy helping people, communicate confidently, pay close attention to detail and can be trusted to work responsibly and independently.

Your responsibilities

Your duties will include:

Welcoming customers and providing friendly, impartial travel advice
Planning journeys and providing information about fares, routes and connections
Selling National Rail tickets using the Fujitsu STAR ticketing system
Processing coach, ferry and hotel bookings where required
Supporting customers during delays, cancellations and other disruption
Handling cash, card payments, tills and floats accurately and securely
Completing daily and shift-end cash balancing and reconciliation
Serving customers purchasing confectionery and other retail products
Receiving stock and maintaining tidy, attractive retail displays
Opening and closing the Travel Centre securely
Keeping the Travel Centre, waiting room, station frontage, platforms and toilets clean, safe and presentable
Replenishing customer facilities, leaflet displays and publicity materials
Identifying and reporting hazards, damage, vandalism or other concerns
Using the station radio professionally and communicating clearly with colleagues
Supporting occasional promotional, community and station activities
Undertaking revenue-protection duties when appropriately directed and trained

About you

You’ll be well suited to this role if you:

Have excellent customer-service and communication skills
Are friendly, approachable and confident dealing with the public
Can handle money accurately and responsibly
Pay close attention to detail and follow procedures consistently
Are dependable, punctual and comfortable working independently
Remain calm and professional during busy periods or service disruption
Are willing to undertake cleaning and practical station-presentation duties
Take pride in maintaining a welcoming, safe and professional environment
Can maintain confidentiality and handle customer information appropriately
Are available to work the advertised fixed hours

Previous experience in retail, travel, ticketing, hospitality or another customer-facing environment would be beneficial but is not essential. Knowledge of the railway, Bishop Auckland and the surrounding area would also be an advantage. Full role-specific training will be provided.
