Full job description

Salary: AfC Band 6, £25.69 per hour (inclusive of holiday pay)

Hours: Bank contract

(NB: Hours offered on an as required basis, up to a maximum of 18 hours weekly, split over 5 sessions, as required, with no guaranteed or minimum hours)

Royal Trinity Hospice is looking for an experienced and compassionate Counsellor to provide counselling needs assessments for patients, families, friends and young adults before and after bereavement. This bank role will support the Patient and Family Support Services team by delivering high-quality, time-limited assessments, clinical formulation and appropriate psychoeducation, helping people affected by serious illness, death, dying and bereavement to access the right support at the right time.

Overall purpose of the role

To provide counselling assessments to families, friends and Royal Trinity Hospice patients, including young adults, pre- and post-bereavement, using a range of counselling methods, approaches and techniques.
To provide formulation of clinical need in line with Trinity assessment frameworks and ensure appropriate onward referral or escalation where required.
To provide psychoeducation to clients about coping skills, hospice and palliative care, and bereavement support.
To complete assessment administration, maintain accurate records and support safe, effective service delivery.
To deliver up to two assessments and associated administration per four-hour session, working flexibly as a bank worker on an as-required basis.

Skills and experience required

Postgraduate qualification in Counselling or Psychotherapy, with membership through UKCP or BACP.
Significant counselling experience, including experience of working with loss, grief, anxiety, depression and people affected by death, dying and bereavement.
Good understanding of relevant psychological theories, therapeutic interventions and models of grief work.
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex and sensitive information clearly and compassionately.
Ability to work independently, manage workload and cases effectively, and practise within professional boundaries, ethical frameworks and organisational policies.
Sound understanding of safeguarding, clinical governance, confidentiality and information governance requirements.
Computer literacy, including use of Microsoft Office, video call platforms and electronic records systems.
Experience of working in healthcare, palliative care, oncology, family work, groups, or with children and young adults would be desirable.
