Are you passionate about reducing health inequalities and supporting people to make positive, life-saving changes? Join NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde’s Prison Healthcare Health Improvement Team and play a vital role in delivering impactful health programmes within the prison estate. This is a unique opportunity to work at the frontline of public health, supporting individuals in custody to improve their health, reduce harm, and build skills that benefit both themselves and others.

About the Role You will lead the delivery and development of peer mentor programmes and alcohol and drug harm reduction initiatives across prisons in Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Central to this role is empowering individuals in custody to become peer mentorsequipping them with the knowledge and confidence to support others.

A key part of your work will involve delivering naloxone training, helping to prevent drug-related deaths, and supporting peer mentors to deliver this training within the prison setting. You will facilitate engaging, structured training sessionsboth one-to-one and in groupscovering a range of health topics including substance use, harm reduction, smoking cessation, and oral health.

Working as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, you will also contribute to wider health improvement programmes such as Quit Your Way (smoking cessation) and Mouth Matters (oral health), helping to promote healthier lifestyles in a challenging but highly rewarding environment. The role is primarily based at HMP Barlinnie, with requirement to work across multiple prison sites. Please note there will also be a requirement to attend the prison for an information session prior to the interview. In addition to this the interview will be an ‘in person’ interview.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

This is fixed term, full-time post of 36 hours.

The role is based at HMP Barlinnie, 81 Lee Avenue G33 2QX, with travel across the prison estate in GGC.

The shift pattern is typically Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm with one 2:30pm finish per week.

Passionate about health improvement and reducing inequalities
Confident delivering training and engaging diverse groups
Organised, proactive, and able to work independently
A strong communicator with the ability to build trust and rapport
Adaptable and resilient, with a positive, solution-focused approach
You should have a health-related degree (or equivalent experience), along with an understanding of public health and health inequalities. Experience in substance use, harm reduction, or working in challenging environments would be highly beneficial.
