Job Description:

RESPONSIBLE FOR

As part of a team, assists in ensuring that lunch times are valuable, social and educational experience for all children and securing the safety and welfare of the children during the midday break.

Assisting the nursery cook with preparing meals, covering and labelling food, stock rotation, unloading and putting away shopping and deliveries and updating any paperwork.

Preparing and cooking meals for the nursery and taking charge of the kitchen in the absence of the nursery cook. (Hours will be 9-5 when cook is absent)

Making sure Environmental Health rules and regulations are adhered to along with Smiles Health and Safety and Safeguarding policy.

Working Monday and Friday 9am-2pm and Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday 10-2 and during school holidays.

JOB SPECIFICATION-KITCHEN ASSISTANT

KEY PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Kitchen assistants will:

Support the nursery cook with preparing and cooking meals.

Taking charge of the kitchen and preparing and cooking meals for the nursery in the absence of the cook.

Taking charge of the paper work in the absence of the cook.

Taking charge of the midday assistants and delegating jobs accordingly in the kitchen in the absence of the cook.

Unpacking any deliveries and checking delivery notes and receipts.

Maintaining cleanliness of the kitchen and cupboards and rotating stock regularly in the kitchen and staff room.

Being in charge of the utility room with the washing and stock.

Wrapping and labelling food correctly.

Supporting with dishing up and serving meals.

Retrieving meals from the kitchen and taking them to the classroom. Ensure they are getting feedback with regards to allergies and ingredients and feeding this back to the teaching staff thoroughly.

Ensuring children with allergies or preferences are provided with the correct meals.

Ensure they are aware of any health care plans in place for children and staff.

Promote good social behaviour and eating habits in line with the age and stage of the children.

Organise and support children’s activity time/sleep time once lunch has finished.

Assist with the children’s general hygiene requirements (washing, toileting changing nappies or clothes).

Have due regard for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of the children and to follow the child protection procedures adopted by Smiles and the safeguarding board.

Being familiar with Smiles policy for promoting good behaviour and follow the agreed approaches to positive behaviour management.

Support colleagues to manage the smooth running of the lunch hour, Informing the teaching staff if a child is unwilling to eat or becomes unwell.

Helping children to become independent in laying the table, using their cutlery, serving their own food, pouring their own drinks and cutting up their food in line with their age and ability.

Helping children to make good choices and encourage children to try new foods.

Engaging children in conversation about food, healthy foods, personal preferences and foods eaten at home. Listening to children and helping children to listen to each other.

Being aware of children with allergies or restricted diets for medical reasons and ensure they are not given inappropriate foods.

Teaching social skills and good manners, ensuring safety with knives and folks and helping children to scrape their own plates and tidy/clear up in a satisfactory manner.

Clean up spillages when food is spilt dropped to make sure it doesn’t become a hazard.

Dealing with bodily spillages in accordance with infection control procedures, ensuring the child is properly cared for.

Sharing responsibility with other midday assistance and teaching staff to maintain order and calm.

Cleaning and mopping the floors in the classroom after lunch.

Cleaning the tables and chairs after lunch.

The post holder will contribute to the nurseries objectives by:

ASSOCIATED AD-HOC DUTIES

Checking toilet areas regularly for signs of child misbehaviour or blockages of toilets/sinks and to ensure no loitering or playing in the toilet area. Reporting any damage or blockages to the manager.

Ensuring any children who have an accident or injury are dealt with appropriately, noting down details using the accident forms, making sure the information is passed to the class teacher. Call a trained first aider when an injury is thought to be serious.

After lunch noting down how much has been eaten, behaviour any incidents and hand to the teaching staff.

All positions are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
Any successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced DBS check before employment commences
