Job Summary

Are you a Band 2 or Band 3 Clinical Support Worker with surgical experience looking for a new challenge? An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our teams on Ward J47/J46 Emergency General Surgery or Ward J42 Urology. As a Band 3 Clinical Support Worker, you will have the opportunity to develop enhanced clinical skills, broaden your knowledge, and gain valuable experience within a busy and supportive ward environment. Working as an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, you will contribute to the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care, supporting patients throughout their inpatient journey and helping to achieve positive clinical outcomes.

We are looking for motivated, compassionate, and proactive individuals who are keen to learn, take on additional responsibilities, and support the development of junior colleagues. You will assist in coordinating patient care, undertake enhanced clinical skills such as venepuncture and cannulation following training and competency assessment, provide 1:1 enhanced care for patients requiring additional support, and work collaboratively with nurses and the wider healthcare team to deliver safe, timely, and effective care. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong organisational abilities, adaptability in a fast-paced environment, and a commitment to delivering outstanding patient care with dignity, compassion, and professionalism

Ward J42 Urology is the only dedicated inpatient urology ward within the Abdominal Medicine and Surgery (AMS) Clinical Service Unit, caring for both acute and elective patients requiring a hospital stay. The ward works closely with urology consultants and the wider urology service to deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centred care. J42 offers excellent opportunities for learning and professional development within the speciality and is recognised as a welcoming and supportive environment with a strong team ethos and a commitment to delivering outstanding care, even in complex and challenging situations.

Wards J47/J46 Emergency General Surgery (EGS) are part of the AMS Clinical Service Unit and form a dynamic and rapidly evolving service that has seen significant growth in recent years. Staff work closely with EGS consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners, matrons, and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide compassionate, high-quality care. With strong links to the Surgical Assessment Unit and Ambulatory Surgical Centre, the wards offer valuable opportunities to develop skills and broaden clinical experience. The team is known for its positive culture, collaborative approach, and commitment to innovation and service improvement, creating an excellent environment for learning, development, and career progression.

What you will bring to the role

Demonstrate a variety of communication skills with patients who may have communication needs and difficulties e.g. confusion, dementia or other linguistic issues

Communicate with colleagues and members of the multi-disciplinary team clearly and effectively in written, verbal and electronic format (this may include accessing and updating patient records on central databases or electronic systems).

Escalate concerns with regards to patient’s physical or psychological needs, or changes in their clinical condition to a registered practitioner within appropriate time frames

Effective use of communication skills when responding to patient’s, relative’s or carer’s concerns and complaints, contributing to the ward, unit or department team action plan to achieve local resolution.

Provide and deliver a high standard of compassionate nursing care recognising and meeting the specific needs of the patients

Following training and assessment, competently undertake clinical activities relevant to the post and clinical area as agreed

Assist in the recording of fluid balance, reporting discrepancies to a registered practitioner.

Assist the patient with all aspects of their personal hygiene.

Participate in own and others annual performance appraisal

Will be expected to lead a team of clinical support workers on a shift by shift basis

Will be expected to contribute to mentorship and appraisal of junior staff.
