Full job description

The Community Worker will play a vital role in improving the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of the community. Building on our successful outreach programme, the postholder will design, deliver, and coordinate inclusive, group-based activities that bring people together, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen community connections.

This role will also focus on revitalising and making better use of local outdoor spaces, ensuring they become active, welcoming, and sustainable places that enhance wellbeing for all.

The person we are looking for will have a genuine passion for supporting people and improving community wellbeing

Key Responsibilities and Specific tasks

Programme Development and Delivery

Design, coordinate, and deliver a programme of group activities that promote health, wellbeing, and social connection (e.g., walking groups, gardening projects, outdoor fitness, and creative wellbeing sessions).
Facilitate sessions in community and outdoor settings, creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for participants.
Lead an initial consultation phase to engage with residents, identify local priorities, and co-produce activity plans based on community feedback.
Ensure that activities are responsive to community needs and accessible to all, including those experiencing barriers to participation.

Community Engagement and Empowerment

Build strong, trusting relationships with residents, community groups, and local partners.
Support the involvement of volunteers and develop local “community champions” to help sustain activities beyond the life of the project.
Encourage co-production by involving residents in the design, delivery, and evaluation of programmes.
Promote opportunities for people to connect with each other, share skills, and develop confidence.

Partnership Working and Signposting

Work collaboratively with the wider outreach team to ensure individuals and groups are linked into appropriate services, resources, and support.
Develop partnerships with local health, wellbeing, and environmental organisations to enhance delivery.
Signpost residents to relevant services, community activities, and sources of advice or assistance.

Monitoring, Evaluation, and Sustainability

Collect data, feedback, and case studies to monitor the impact of activities and inform continuous improvement.
Produce regular reports on participation, outcomes, and progress toward project goals.
Develop toolkits, session plans, and wellbeing materials to ensure ongoing use and sustainability.
Contribute to the long-term sustainability of the programme by identifying funding opportunities and community-led models of continuation.

Environmental and Community Space Development

Support the development and improvement of local outdoor and green spaces, including the Growing Together Community Garden.
Coordinate community-led environmental projects such as clean-ups, planting schemes, and outdoor wellbeing events.
Foster a sense of ownership and pride among residents in the improvement and care of local spaces.

Essential Skills and Experience

· Experience working in a community, health, wellbeing, or outreach setting.

· Experience working within a budget

· Ability to engage and motivate people from diverse backgrounds, including those facing disadvantage or isolation.

· Experience in planning and facilitating group sessions and community activities.

· Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and trust.

· Knowledge of factors affecting health and wellbeing in deprived or marginalised communities.

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

· Good organisational and time management skills.

· Familiarity with data collection and impact evaluation.

· Commitment to equality, inclusion, and co-production principles.

Desirable Skills and Experience

· Qualification or training in health promotion, community development, fitness, or wellbeing (or equivalent experience).

· Experience of volunteer coordination or community capacity-building.

· Knowledge of safeguarding and risk assessment procedures.

· Creative approach to activity planning and problem-solving.

Person Specification

Essential

GCSE A-C or equivalent in Maths and English
This post requires satisfactory clearance of DBS disclosure.

Desirable

A level 3 qualification or A levels
Community work / Environment / Activity qualification.
Evidence of relevant training and development
Driving licence and access to a car
