Job Title Support Worker

Responsible to Registered Service Manager

A Supported Accommodation Support Worker for young people aged 16+ support’s residents in their transition to independent living, focusing on developing key life skills and

emotional resilience.

To provide advice, assistance and support to young people aged 16 – 18 years old.

To support them with their practical, and emotional needs increasing independent

living skills.

To act as an appropriate role model and to work closely with them to enable them to

address their diﬃculties and achieve their optimum potential.

The role involves providing both practical and emotional support within a safe,

structured environment.

Typical duties and responsibilities

1. Empower young people to achieve independence

Life skills development: Provide one-on-one and group support to help young

people learn and practice essential skills for independent living, such as

budgeting, cooking, cleaning, and shopping.

Education and employment support: Assist young people in creating CVs,

applying for courses or jobs, and attending interviews. Encourage and

motivate engagement in training or educational opportunities.

Tenancy sustainment: Guide residents on their rights and responsibilities to

ensure they can successfully maintain a tenancy when they leave the

supported accommodation.

Managing complex needs: Use a trauma-informed approach to support young

people who may have experienced challenging circumstances, including care

leavers and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children.

2. Provide emotional and mental health support

Build trusting relationships: Act as a positive role model and build

professional, trusting relationships with residents to offer consistent

emotional support and guidance.

Promote wellbeing: Provide a listening ear and help young people gain self-

control by challenging negative behaviours and celebrating positive conduct.

De-escalate challenging behaviour: Handle difficult situations with patience

and empathy, using de-escalation techniques where necessary.

Crisis intervention: Offer fallback support for residents during times of crisis

and remain calm and supportive under pressure.

3. Maintain a safe and healthy environment

Safeguarding: Ensure the safety and well-being of all residents by working in

line with all safeguarding policies and procedures.

Risk assessment and management: Complete and review risk assessments

and support plans for young people, managing any identified risks.

Site management: Ensure the supported accommodation is clean, safe, and

secure, including carrying out health and safety checks.

Record-keeping: Maintain thorough and accurate written records of

observations, progress towards goals, and any incidents.

4. Collaborate with external agencies

Advocacy and liaison: Act as an advocate for residents and work

collaboratively with external professionals such as social workers, mental

health services, and education providers to ensure holistic support.

Accessing services: Help young people to register with essential services like

healthcare (GPs), benefits services, and other community resources.

Communication: Attend multi-agency meetings to discuss residents' progress

and represent their best interests.

Working conditions

Shift work: The role involves shift patterns, including evenings, weekends,

bank holidays, and overnight sleep-in shifts.

Work setting: Based within the supported accommodation, with some travel

required to attend appointments or community activities with residents.

DBS check: An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is

required.

Essential skills and qualities

Patience, kindness, and a compassionate nature
Excellent communication and active listening skills
The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
Strong literacy and IT skills for record-keeping
Good understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries
Emotional resilience and the ability to work under pressure
Microsoft Office
Clear Care or similar
