Full job description

Nursery Cook / Housekeeper

Company: Twinkle Toes Nursery
Location: Selby
Job Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: £12.71 per hour
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm

Ongoing support and guidance from experienced Nursery Managers within the group

Purpose of post:

To organise, cook and prepare a healthy balanced diet for children from birth to 5 years and charge of laundry and cleaning communal areas within the nursery.

Key areas:

Provision of food
Hygiene, health and safety

Responsible to: Nursery Manager/Deputy Manager

Main duties:

Budget holder for the provision of food and associated goods for the nursery and be responsible for the purchase of such provisions
Keep weekly accounts of such expenditure
Be responsible, in conjunction with the Manager, for planning healthy and balanced menus
Prepare meals according to individual dietary requirements where necessary
Ensure meals/snacks are safely prepared, nutritionally balanced, of good quality and appropriate in quantity following recommendations in Public Health England TheEatwell Guide (2018)
Be clear about the regulations relating to allergies and provide adequate information to parents about the contents of meals provided
Co-ordinate serving the mid-day meal and snacks throughout the day
Wash-up crockery, cutlery and all equipment used to prepare meals
Be responsible for hygiene and risk assessment within the kitchen area, including all record keeping relevant to the post
Be responsible for food safety within the nursery including all safety checks relating to food storage and preparation
Maintain an agreed high standard of hygiene and cleanliness within the kitchen area
Be in charge of laundry and cleaning communal areas within the nursery

Qualifications:

Essential:

Minimum Level 2 qualification in Food Safety and Hygiene
Knowledge of food allergen management and food safety regulations

Desirable:

Paediatric First Aid certifications
Level 3 qualification in Food Safety and Hygiene

Experience:

Previous experience as a cook, catering assistant, or housekeeper, preferably in a nursery, school, care home, or similar setting
Experience preparing healthy, balanced meals for children and catering for dietary requirements, allergies, and cultural preferences
Experience maintaining high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in kitchens and communal areas
Experience following cleaning schedules and health and safety procedures
Experience managing food stock, ordering supplies, and reducing food waste (desirable)

Knowledge & Skills:

Good understanding of food hygiene legislation and HACCP principles
Knowledge of COSHH and safe use of cleaning products
Ability to prepare nutritious meals from fresh ingredients
Good organisational and time management skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Good communication skills
Reliable, flexible, and able to prioritise tasks
