Full job description

Overview

A specialist therapeutic SEND provision in Oakham is recruiting a Therapeutic Learning Support Assistant to start in September. The provision supports children and young people with significant SEMH needs, trauma backgrounds, anxiety, attachment difficulties and Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).

The school takes a highly nurturing and therapeutic approach to education, combining academic support with emotional development and wellbeing interventions. Pupils often require a consistent adult who can provide reassurance, stability and encouragement while helping them gradually re-engage with learning and school life.

This is a full-time position with the potential to become permanent.

Key Responsibilities:

Build secure and trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced barriers to education or difficulties engaging within school settings.
Support learners on a one-to-one basis and within small groups, helping them access education and therapeutic interventions.
Implement emotional regulation strategies, behaviour support plans and therapeutic recommendations.
Work alongside teachers, pastoral leads and therapeutic professionals to deliver a consistent approach.
Support pupils experiencing anxiety, school avoidance, emotional dysregulation or behavioural challenges.
Assist in delivering activities that promote wellbeing, confidence-building, emotional literacy and resilience.
Use trauma-informed, attachment-aware and restorative approaches to support positive outcomes.
Encourage pupils to identify emotions, develop coping strategies and build healthier relationships.
Support gradual reintegration into learning for pupils who may have experienced prolonged periods of absence or disengagement.
Monitor progress, engagement and wellbeing through detailed observations and record keeping.

Pre-requisites:

Experience working with SEMH, mental health needs, trauma, attachment difficulties or challenging behaviour.
Understanding of therapeutic approaches and trauma-informed practice.
Ability to remain calm and consistent during periods of emotional dysregulation.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Resilient, empathetic and reflective approach.
Background in education, youth work, mentoring, support work, residential care or mental health support beneficial.
Relevant qualifications in Psychology, Education, Health & Social Care, Youth Work or equivalent experience desirable.

Pay: £100.00-£120.00 per day
