Experience & Events Manager

Reporting to: Head of Commerce

Direct Report: Shows Manager

Location: British Motor Museum, Gaydon

Contract: Permanent, Full-Time (37 hours per week)

Salary: Competitive (subject to experience £48k-£55K)

About the British Motor Museum

The British Motor Museum is home to the world's largest collection of historic British cars, telling the story of the people, products and innovations that have helped shape Britain and the world.

But British cars are never just cars. They are the engineers who challenged convention, the designers who changed industries, the communities they supported and the culture they influenced. As the Museum embarks on a transformational programme of development over the next three to five years, we are seeking an exceptional Experience & Events Manager to help redefine how visitors connect with Britain's automotive story.

The Opportunity

This is a rare opportunity to take ownership of one of the UK's most distinctive visitor experience programmes. Approximately 65% of the role focuses on developing and evolving the Shows & Events Programme, while 35% focuses on enhancing the overall visitor experience through cross-department collaboration. Managing a revenue budget of approximately £650,000 and leading the Shows Manager, the successful candidate will have significant autonomy and influence.

Events & Programme Development (65%)

Develop and deliver a long-term Events & Experiences Strategy.
Review and evolve the current programme of approximately 30 annual events.
Create innovative flagship events with broader audience appeal.
Develop indoors, evening and seasonal experiences.
Lead concept creation from idea to operational handover.
Manage the Shows & Events revenue budget of approximately £650,000.

Visitor Experience Development (35%)

Champion visitor experience across the organisation.
Work collaboratively with Curatorial, Learning & Community, Marketing, Museum Assistants and operational teams.
Identify opportunities to improve the visitor journey and engagement.
Support delivery of the wider Museum transformation programme.
Use audience insight and feedback to drive continuous improvement.

Commercial & Financial Management

Deliver agreed revenue, attendance and profitability targets.
Develop new income streams through partnerships, sponsorship and premium experiences.

Leadership & Collaboration

Provide leadership and direction to the Shows Manager.
Build effective relationships across all Museum departments.
Collaborate across the business to create seamless visitor experiences.

Governance

Ensure robust planning, risk management and operational governance.
Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety requirements.

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Significant experience creating successful events, experiences or visitor attractions.
Exceptional creativity and concept-development skills.
Strong commercial awareness and budget management experience.
Passion for creating memorable visitor experiences.

Success Measures – year 1

Develop a three-year Events & Experiences Strategy.
Launch one or more new flagship experiences.
Grow audiences beyond traditional enthusiast groups.
Deliver measurable improvements in visitor satisfaction.

Working Arrangements

The role will require occasional weekend and event-day attendance. Time worked outside normal contractual hours may be reclaimed through the Museum's TOIL policy.

Actively contribute to the success of the charity delivering your duties and other duties, as may reasonably be assigned, to support business operations and organisational goals.
