Maintenance Engineer – Electrical & Machine Setup
LOCATION: Needham Market, Suffolk
WORKING PATTERN: Full-time | On-site, 4 day working week plus 1 x Friday per month (4 hours)

PACKAGE: £30,000 plus per annum, dependent on skills & experience

You’ll join a hands-on Engineering team working closely with Production and Quality to keep our machinery safe, reliable and ready to perform. Your work will directly support production, minimise downtime and help us deliver the quality and reliability our customers depend on.
The opportunity
This is a hands-on role at the heart of production. You’ll keep our packaging lines running safely and reliably through effective machine setup, planned maintenance and fast, practical fault-finding. When equipment stops, you’ll help get it moving. When it’s running, you’ll help keep it that way.
What you’ll own
- Machine readiness. Set up machinery and complete production line changeovers accurately and efficiently.
- Planned maintenance. Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to improve equipment reliability and prevent avoidable breakdowns.
- Breakdown response. Respond quickly and calmly to machinery breakdowns, minimising downtime and disruption to production.
- Fault-finding. Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical / electromechanical faults across packaging and production equipment.
- Root cause thinking. Look beyond the immediate fix, identify recurring issues and support lasting corrective action.
- Equipment reliability. Inspect machinery for wear, defects and early signs of failure before they become bigger problems.
- Safe engineering. Follow health and safety procedures, safe systems of work and site quality standards every time.
- Clear records. Accurately record maintenance activity, repairs and recurring faults.
- One team working. Work closely with Engineering, Production and Quality to solve problems and keep operations moving.
- Peak-period support. Work flexibly with the team when production demand is at its highest.
What good looks like
Equipment reliability. Planned preventative maintenance is completed, reducing avoidable faults and breakdowns.
Breakdown response. Faults are diagnosed quickly, repairs are effective and production downtime is minimised.
Quality of repair. Repairs address the root cause, meet safety standards and do not create repeat problems.
Production support. Changeovers and engineering support are delivered efficiently to keep production moving.
Safe working. Engineering work follows health and safety procedures, safe systems of work and quality standards.
Maintenance records. Maintenance activity, repairs and recurring faults are recorded clearly and accurately.
Team confidence. Engineering, Production and Quality receive clear updates, dependable support and no avoidable surprises.
What you’ll bring
- Experience as a maintenance engineer, electrical engineer, or engineering technician.
- Maintenance experience within manufacturing, production, packaging or FMCG.
- Strong electrical fault-finding and diagnostic skills with a logical, methodical approach to root-cause analysis and problem-solving.
- Practical mechanical and electromechanical maintenance experience.
- Experience of planned preventative maintenance, reactive maintenance and breakdown repairs.
- The ability to stay calm and make sound decisions under pressure.
- An understanding of manufacturing health and safety requirements.
- Clear communication and the ability to work effectively across Engineering, Production and Quality.
- A dependable, flexible approach and pride in completing work properly.
Useful, not essential
- A recognised electrical or mechanical engineering qualification.
- Experience maintaining packaging or automated production machinery.
- Some knowledge of PLC fault-finding, sensors, pneumatics or hydraulics.
