Benchdogs Ltd is looking for a reliable and practical Laser Machine, Tube Laser and Press Brake Operator to join our production team.
The main responsibilities will include operating our sheet laser cutting machine, tube laser, laser welder and press brake, preparing materials, checking completed components and assisting with other production duties when required.
Previous experience with laser machinery or press brakes would be beneficial; however, full training will be provided on our specific equipment, including the tube laser and laser welding machine.
This is a hands-on and physically active role. It includes regular manual handling of sheet metal, metal tubing, components, tooling and finished products. Some materials and components may be heavy, bulky or awkward to handle.
Applicants must be able to undertake the essential physical duties of the role safely, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching and working on their feet for extended periods. Appropriate handling equipment, team lifting and safe working procedures must be used whenever required. Reasonable adjustments will be considered where appropriate.
Main responsibilities
- Operating and monitoring sheet laser cutting machinery.
- Setting up and operating the tube laser.
- Loading and unloading sheet material, metal tubes and completed components.
- Setting up and operating the press brake.
- Selecting the correct press brake tooling and carrying out machine adjustments.
- Operating the laser welding machine.
- Preparing and positioning components for laser welding.
- Inspecting welded joints and finished components.
- Reading and working from technical drawings and production instructions.
- Checking dimensions using appropriate measuring equipment.
- Inspecting completed parts to ensure they meet the required quality standards.
- Identifying and reporting machine, material or quality issues.
- Carrying out routine machine checks, cleaning and basic maintenance.
- Deburring, cleaning, finishing, packing and moving completed components.
- Keeping machinery and surrounding work areas clean, organised and safe.
- Completing production records and following job priorities.
- Assisting with assembly, packing, dispatch and other production duties when required.
- Following all company health and safety procedures.
Training
Training will be provided on our specific machinery and production processes, including:
- Sheet laser operation.
- Tube laser operation.
- Laser welding.
- Press brake operation and setup.
- Machine safety procedures.
- Manual handling and the safe movement of materials.
- Quality control and inspection procedures.
Applicants must be willing to learn new machinery, follow instructions and complete any required internal or external training.
Manual handling and health and safety
This position involves regular manual handling and the movement of metal sheets, metal tubes, tooling, parts and finished products.
The successful applicant will be expected to:
- Follow all manual handling assessments, training and safe systems of work.
- Use lifting equipment, handling aids or team-lifting procedures where required.
- Wear the correct personal protective equipment.
- Operate machinery only when trained and authorised to do so.
- Carry out pre-use safety checks and report defects immediately.
- Maintain safe working distances and follow machine-guarding procedures.
- Follow all laser safety and welding safety procedures.
- Keep walkways and working areas clear of hazards.
- Report accidents, near misses and health and safety concerns promptly.
- Never attempt to lift or move an item that cannot be handled safely.
Skills and experience
Essential
- Previous experience working in a manufacturing, engineering or metalworking environment.
- Experience operating industrial machinery.
- A good understanding of workplace health and safety.
- An understanding of safe manual handling practices.
- The ability to follow technical drawings, measurements and written instructions.
- Good attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate work.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
- A reliable, flexible and responsible approach to work.
- A willingness to learn how to operate new machinery.
- A willingness to assist with other production duties when required.
Desirable
- Previous experience operating a sheet laser cutting machine.
- Previous experience operating a tube laser.
- Previous laser welding or general welding experience.
- Previous press brake operating and setting experience.
- Experience selecting press brake tooling and calculating bends.
- Experience working with sheet aluminium, steel or metal tubing.
- Experience using verniers, tape measures, angle gauges and other measuring equipment.
- A current forklift licence or recognised forklift training certificate.
Travel to work
Our premises are in a rural location and are not served by convenient public transport, particularly for the required working hours.
Applicants must therefore be able to make reliable arrangements to travel to and from work for every scheduled shift. On-site parking is available.
