Full job description

Birchy Hill Care Home is located in the picturesque village of Sway and provides high‑quality residential and nursing care for up to 58 older people across five welcoming units.

The Senior Activity Organiser is responsible for developing, leading and delivering a comprehensive programme of meaningful activities that enhance the physical, emotional, social and cognitive wellbeing of all residents, including those living with dementia. The role ensures that activities are person-centred, inclusive, and tailored to residents’ individual abilities, histories and preferences, promoting dignity, independence, purpose and quality of life.

The post holder will act as a positive role model and upstanding professional, demonstrating compassion, integrity and respect in all interactions with residents, families and colleagues.

Be able to lead a small team of activity staff in delivering quality planned activities.

1 Key Responsibilities

Activity Programme Development

Plan, organise and deliver a varied, stimulating and meaningful programme of leisure, social and therapeutic activities designed to support residents’ physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
Ensure activities are inclusive and accessible, with particular focus on engaging residents living with dementia through sensory, reminiscence, music, movement and cognitive stimulation activities.
Promote person-centred activities that reflect residents’ life history, interests, hobbies, culture and preferences.
Encourage residents to maintain previous hobbies, skills and interests wherever possible.
Develop both group and one-to-one activities, recognising that some residents may require tailored engagement due to cognitive or physical limitations.

Dementia-Focused Engagement

Demonstrate understanding of the needs of residents living with dementia and ensure activities support orientation, memory, comfort and emotional wellbeing.
Promote a dementia-friendly environment that encourages participation, reduces anxiety and supports meaningful engagement.
Work closely with care staff to ensure activity approaches align with best practice in dementia care.

Leadership and Team Collaboration

Motivate, guide and support Activity staff care staff to actively participate in the home’s activity programme and integrate engagement opportunities into daily care routines.
To Supervise Activity staff to deliver plan activities and manage time.
Work collaboratively with the Home Manager, nurses, senior care assistants and other team members to ensure activities form an integral part of residents’ daily life.
Encourage staff, volunteers, relatives and friends to participate in and support activities within the home.
Promote a culture of teamwork, respect and cooperation, supporting positive communication and conflict resolution when required.

Resident Wellbeing and Social Inclusion

Encourage residents to socialise and build relationships within the home in a safe, welcoming and supportive environment.
Provide opportunities that enhance intellectual stimulation, social interaction, creativity and enjoyment.
Facilitate links with the local community, including schools, entertainers, volunteers and community groups where appropriate.

Events and Community Engagement

Assist the Home Manager in planning and organising special events such as seasonal celebrations, themed days and community events including:
Summer fetes
Coffee mornings
Christmas celebrations
Macmillan Coffee Morning
National Care Home Open Day
Ensure events create a sense of celebration, belonging and connection for residents and families.

Communication and Relationship Building

Maintain strong communication with residents, relatives and staff to ensure activities meet the needs and wishes of residents.
Foster positive relationships with families and encourage their involvement in activities where possible.
Provide regular updates to the Home Manager regarding activity engagement, outcomes and improvements.

Social Media and Promotion

Promote the care home positively by sharing appropriate updates, events and activity highlights via the company’s approved social media platforms.
Ensure all posts respect residents’ privacy, dignity and consent requirements.

Record Keeping and Planning

Plan and maintain weekly activity rotas based on resident feedback, interests and abilities.
Complete accurate activity records using the agreed company format.
Provide monthly activity updates and reports to the Home Manager, including participation levels and new initiatives.

Professional Standards

Uphold and promote the principles of privacy, dignity, independence, choice, rights and fulfilment for all residents.
Maintain a courteous, respectful and professional manner at all times.
Present a professional image by maintaining a neat, clean appearance and wearing the appropriate company uniform.
Participate in all required training, including dementia awareness and activity-based care approaches.

About the Role

To help keep our friendly home a happy, vibrant and stimulating place to live, we are looking for you to work 40 hours per week, including occasional evenings and weekends.

Working alongside our Lead Leisure & Lifestyle Coordinator, this is a varied and rewarding role.

All appointments are subject to safer recruitment requirements to ensure the safeguarding of adults and successful applicants are required to provide an enhanced DBS disclosure at their own cost.

All applicants must already be based in the UK.
