Job summary

Dr Mirza & Partners has a vacancy for a fixed-term part-time Prescribing Clerk; to cover maternity leave for a minimum of 9 months, this period may be extended dependent on the return date. Post start date in July 2026.

We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, highly motivated with excellent organisation skills to join our friendly, forward-thinking team.

The post is 25 hours per week, 5 hours per day Monday - Friday.

Job Title: Prescribing Clerk

Main Purpose of Post: To process prescriptions and provide an efficient and safe system of medication reviews, liaising with all relevant parties, including phone call contact with patients and other health care professionals regarding medication queries.

To ensure all administration duties and patient requests are processed in accordance with practice policy.

Responsible to: Practice Manager

Special requirements of the post

Knowledge of medicines and drugs
Excellent communication skills
An ability to use own judgement, initiative and common sense in response to patient requests.
An understanding, acceptance and adherence to the need for strict confidentiality and compliance to The Data Protection Act
Keyboard skills and computer literacy
The ability to work alone or as a team member from time to time.

Main Responsibilities:

Process repeat prescriptions on a daily basis ensuring compliance with the practice protocol, ensuring prescriptions are ready for collection within 48 hours.
Ensure all current medication have relevant, current authorizations.
Promote cost-effective prescribing at the practice through switching drugs to the generic preparation when appropriate and encouraging the use of local ICB formulary medication choices.
Deal with prescription queries from a range of healthcare professionals including: GPs, nurses, community pharmacists, nursing home staff as well as reception/administration staff at the practice.
Working closely with the prescribing administrator, read and act upon any relevant information published.
Add new patient medication. Pass to registered GP for approval highlighting any concerns found. Liaise with the patient via phone call or letter.
Regularly update patients INR results to ensure correct monitoring of Warfarin and minimizing the risk of adverse effects.
Any other duties as reasonable requested.

Contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and making suggestions on ways to improve and enhance the teams performance
Work effectively with individuals in other agencies to meet patients needs
Effectively manage own time, workload and resources.

Communication:

The post holder should recognise the importance of effective communication with the team and will strive to:

Communicate effectively with other team members.
Communicate effectively with patients and carers.
Communicate effectively with the ICB medication optimisation team.
Recognise peoples needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly.

Contribution to the Implementation of Services:

The post holder will:

Apply practice policies, standards and guidance.
Discuss with other members of the team how the policies, standards and guidelines will affect own work.
Participate in audits where possible.

a) Non-Disclosure: Subject to the necessary sharing of information with other health professions, you are required to preserve the confidentiality of patients. You are required to adhere to your professional code of conduct in relation to patient confidentiality. This is in conjunction with Practices Confidentiality Policy. A breach of this Policy may be grounds for your dismissal. This duty to maintain confidentiality applies both during and after your employment with us. A breach of confidentiality while you are employed with us may lead to disciplinary action being taken against you. After termination of employment a breach of confidentiality by you will render you liable to legal action. This does not affect your statutory rights under the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998.

b) Papers and documents: You must return to us all documents, forms, papers and other records, relating to your employment with us, together with all tapes, discs, keys and computers, immediately on the termination of your employment and you must sign an undertaking that all such property has been returned.
