About us

Horner Shearing is a family-run business based in the village of West Bradford, a short drive from Clitheroe. Established in 1989, we have grown from a husband-and-wife partnership into a successful international business, while remaining firmly rooted in the agricultural community.

Our story began when founders Willie and Mary Horner designed and sold the ground-breaking Longhorn 12v shearing machine, which has since become iconic among professional shearers and farmers around the world.

Still managed by founder Willie and his son Will, we are proud to be a traditional, local, family business. We value strong working relationships with our customers, many of whom have been with us for years.

From our site in West Bradford, we cover the full process from the manufacture and fabrication of our world-renowned sheep shearing products through to sales, servicing, repairs and product innovation.

We are now looking for a Sales, Marketing & Design Assistant to join our team. This is a varied role suited to someone who is creative, organised, confident speaking with customers and willing to get stuck in with day-to-day sales, marketing and office work.

The role

This is a varied role involving customer service, sales support, graphic design and helping to develop our marketing activity.

You will work alongside our existing graphics colleague, collaborating on adverts, brochures, product artwork and other creative projects. While we already have graphic design support within the business, we do not currently have a dedicated marketing person. This creates an excellent opportunity for someone to contribute ideas and help shape how we promote our products, plan advertising, organise product photography and create marketing materials for both print and digital use.

The role will also involve answering customer calls, assisting with enquiries, processing orders and supporting the office during busy periods.

Your duties will include:

Working alongside our existing graphics colleague to produce creative materials and maintain a consistent company style
Helping to plan adverts, promotions and marketing campaigns
Creating and updating marketing materials using Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
Designing adverts and social media content, as well as assisting with our annual trade and retail brochures
Creating artwork, diagrams and documentation for in-house processes, including laying out and updating SOP documents, instruction sheets and internal process guides
Preparing print-ready artwork, including carrying out layout checks, checking sizing and image resolution, and exporting final PDF files
Organising and planning product photoshoots for use online, in adverts, catalogues and other printed materials
Editing, cropping, retouching and resizing product images for web and print
Helping to produce product images, descriptions and other content for our website and social media channels
Working with colleagues across the business to gather product information, images and design ideas
Assisting with promotions and seasonal campaigns where required
Answering customer phone calls and dealing with enquiries in a friendly and professional manner
Helping customers with product information, order queries and general sales enquiries
Processing customer orders and updating our in-house software
Supporting day-to-day office and sales administration
Carrying out other varied duties as required

Candidates must have:

A friendly and courteous attitude towards customers and colleagues at all times
Excellent verbal communication skills and confidence speaking to customers on the phone
Good written communication skills
Strong attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate work
Good organisational skills and the ability to manage a varied workload
Confidence using computers and a willingness to learn new software and in-house systems
An interest in sales, marketing, graphic design, advertising and product presentation
A collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively alongside colleagues
A can-do attitude and the flexibility to help where needed

Ideally, candidates will:

Have experience using Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
Have an understanding of graphic design, page layout, typography, branding and visual communication
Be able to create clean, professional artwork and visual assets for print and digital use
Have experience producing brochures, leaflets, adverts, posters, catalogues, packaging artwork, website banners or social media graphics
Understand, or be willing to learn, print artwork requirements such as CMYK, bleed, crop marks, image resolution and PDF export
Have an eye for product photography, image composition, colour, detail and presentation
Be confident editing product images, including cropping, resizing, retouching, colour correction and file organisation
Understand the importance of brand consistency across adverts, printed materials, website content and social media
Be creative and practical, with the ability to develop ideas collaboratively and turn them into finished marketing materials
Be comfortable sharing ideas, receiving feedback and working alongside an existing graphics colleague
Have previous customer service, retail, office, sales or marketing experience
Have an interest in agriculture, machinery or practical products, although full training will be provided

Job type: Full Time

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm and some Saturday mornings during busy periods. (8am-12.30pm)

Saturdays are usually decided between colleagues as to who is available.

Hourly Rate: £15.00 - £16.00 per hour, depending on experience and ability.
