HR Assistant (HR & Compliance)

Location: Amersham, Buckinghamshire
Reporting to: HR and Compliance Officer
Oversight: Head of HR & Compliance

About the Role

We are looking for a highly organised, proactive and resilient HR Assistant to join our HR & Compliance team.

This is a fast-paced, high-volume role where no two days are the same. You will play a key role in keeping HR operations running smoothly across a growing, multi-site legal firm.

The role requires someone who can think on their feet, respond to urgent issues quickly, and manage competing priorities in real time. You must be comfortable working under pressure, taking ownership of tasks, and confidently following things through to completion.

Key Responsibilities

Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records in line with GDPR requirements
Prepare HR documentation using approved templates (e.g. contracts, onboarding materials)
Co-ordinate onboarding and offboarding processes, ensuring all tasks are completed on time
Take ownership of the HR inbox, prioritising, responding to and escalating queries quickly and appropriately
Administer absence records, annual leave and HR trackers
Update and maintain HR systems (including Plumm) accurately and consistently
Maintain compliance logs, training records, and audit documentation
Chase managers, staff and stakeholders to ensure required information and actions are completed
Respond to urgent requests and shifting priorities, often at short notice

Working Environment

This is not a routine administrative role. You will be working in an environment where:

Priorities change quickly
Urgent issues require immediate action
Multiple tasks need attention at the same time
You will need to make quick decisions on what to prioritise

What We’re Looking For

Essential:

Previous administrative experience (1–2 years minimum)
Experience in a fast-paced, high-volume environment
Ability to prioritise workload quickly and effectively
Confidence to follow up, chase and hold others accountable
Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure
Strong organisational, IT and communication skills

Desirable:

Experience within HR, legal, or professional services
Experience using HR systems

About You

You will:

Be highly organised, proactive and detail-focused
Be comfortable juggling multiple priorities at once
Be confident in managing urgency and reacting quickly
Not be afraid to challenge, follow up or push back where needed
Take ownership of your work and see tasks through to completion
Handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism

Salary

Starting at £26,000 per annum (depending on experience and suitability)

This salary reflects:

The operational and administrative nature of the role
The high-volume, fast-paced working environment
The requirement to manage competing priorities and respond to urgent requests

Progression opportunities are available for individuals who demonstrate the ability to develop into more judgement-led HR work over time.

Compliance & Confidentiality

This role involves handling sensitive employee data and requires absolute confidentiality.

You will be responsible for ensuring all HR data is handled securely and in line with firm policies, and for escalating any data protection or compliance concerns immediately.
