Workshop Support Assistant

Hours: 36.75 hours per week (Fixed Hours: 8:45am – 4:30pm Monday to Thursday, 8:45am – 2:30pm Friday)

Job Overview

Supported Community Business (SCB) is a Crewe-based charity providing meaningful day opportunities for adults with additional support needs. We are looking for a practical, reliable and motivated Workshop Support Assistant to join our team.

This is a hands-on role supporting adults with additional support needs in a structured workshop environment, helping them build practical skills, confidence, independence and work readiness through meaningful daily activity.

The role combines person-centred support with practical workshop duties and requires someone who is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, maintaining high standards and taking an active role in deliveries, stock handling and workshop organisation.

Responsibilities

Support trainees in practical workshop-based activities to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills
Teach work-based skills such as counting, packing, assembly, quality checking and precision-based tasks
Provide tailored support and guidance based on individual needs and abilities
Help trainees build confidence, independence, social skills and work readiness
Maintain a safe, inclusive and productive workshop environment in line with safeguarding and health and safety procedures
Carry out deliveries and collections using the company van as part of daily operations
Undertake forklift duties for stock handling, loading and workshop operations (training provided if required)
Support quality control processes to ensure customer work is completed accurately and to a high standard
Assist with workshop organisation, maintenance and upkeep
Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers to support the wider aims of the charity

Requirements

Strong communication and interpersonal skills with a positive and patient attitude (Essential)
Ability to work independently and as part of a team (Essential)
Full UK driving licence and confidence driving a light commercial company van (Essential)
Willingness and ability to drive the company van regularly as part of the role (Essential)
Willingness to undertake and maintain forklift training and carry out forklift duties as part of daily operations (Essential)
Ability to undertake physical workshop duties including lifting, moving stock and setting up workstations (Essential)
Experience working with adults with additional support needs (Desirable)
Experience working in a workshop, warehouse or practical production environment (Desirable)
Commitment to supporting the charity’s fundraising and promotional activities (Desirable)

Important: Driving the company vehicle and undertaking forklift duties are core requirements of this role. Successful completion of forklift training and demonstration of competence in both areas will form part of the probationary assessment and ongoing conditions of employment.

SCB is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of adults with additional support needs. All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and a six-month probationary period.
