Full job description

* This position is initially to provide maternity cover from August 2026 to February 2027, with a potential full time position available at the end of this period. Training would ideally commence in July. *

Flexible Personal Care Assistant required for a quadraplegic client (spinal cord injury) in the Nottingham/Derby area.

We have an opening to join an established small, tight-knit care team.

This role requires an individual who is motivated to learn a wide variety of skills and take on a broad range of responsibilities. You will need to be comfortable with:

bearing significant responsibility in the lifestyle and management of an individual with a complex condition
operating and maintaining medical equipment
domestic tasks
intimate care
a dynamic work environment, with a small team and varying schedule
driving
receiving an education in the management of an individual with a complex condition
Travel abroad

Given the nature of the role previous healthcare or nursing experience is helpful but not absolutely required.

The client's independence is focal to the care you will help provide, making for a stimulating work environment as you assist him in living a fulfilling life.

The nature of the work is varied: the client works in a professional environment and studies part-time, travels to various events in the UK and holidays abroad. Your duties day to day will be according to the shift you are working: this consists of a live in week, a live out/stand-by 7am-5pm Monday to Friday and one week off.

During your 'live in week', you have a private annex within the house which has a kitchenette and a bathroom. You would be expected to be available throughout the day for the client but would not be expected to be called on in the night.

You will be working closely with other team members according to who is on shift- this will give you excellent opportunity to learn from established members of the team.

On an average day, PAs will assist with all activities of daily living: dress, toilet and showering. There are rehabilitation exercises in the morning: using a standing frame, simple stretches and/or functional electrical stimulation. PAs will receive manual handling training and need to be confident in their physical ability.

PAs are responsible for helping maintain the household: changing bed sheets if needed, hoovering, etc. Where possible, a 2 hour break is given to the live in PA to leave the house- this time is covered by the live out PA.

The client works in a law firm 2 days per week. PAs will need to accompany him and assist with fundamental tasks. PAs are a reflection of the client and will need to be comfortable in a professional environment.

Otherwise, the live in PA will be available to help with food and drink preparation, catheter care and any other regular needs.

The client lives with his wife, 18 month old daughter, dog and four chickens.

Essential Criteria:

PAs are required to drive the client’s vehicle therefore all applicants MUST have a full clean driving licence.
You MUST be flexible and available to work either days or nights and on any day of the week.
You must live within an hours commute of the client's property to cover the standby shift
A DBS check will be paid for as part of your recruitment.
A first round of interviews will be held remotely via video chat, followed by a second round in person.

Training

All successful applicants will be required to complete at least 1 paid shadow shift and complete mandatory training before beginning work. This will cover Spinal Cord Injury Education, Bowel and Bladder care and Safer People Handling.

All successful applicants will commence on a 6-month probationary period with reviews after the 1st, 3rd and 6th months.
