Job Title: Care Home Cook
Location: Glencairn House, Cornwall Road, Dorchester, DT1 1RU
Hours: 35 hours per week including alternate weekends
Reports to: Home Manager / Deputy Manager
Salary: £14.50 per hour

About the Role

We are looking for a reliable, caring and organised Cook to join our residential care home in Dorchester. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing nutritious, appetising and well-balanced meals for our residents, while taking into account individual dietary needs, preferences and any medical or cultural requirements.

This is an important role within the home, helping to create a warm, homely atmosphere where mealtimes are enjoyable, safe and person-centred.

Key Responsibilities

Plan, prepare and cook fresh meals, snacks and refreshments for residents.
Cater for a range of dietary needs, including soft diets, diabetic diets, allergies, intolerances and fortified meals.
Work with care staff to understand residents’ preferences, dislikes and nutritional requirements.
Ensure meals are presented attractively and served at the correct temperature.
Maintain high standards of food hygiene and kitchen cleanliness.
Follow food safety procedures, including temperature checks, stock rotation, cleaning schedules and allergen management.
Order, receive and store food supplies appropriately.
Minimise waste while ensuring good-quality, varied meals are provided.
Keep accurate records in line with the home’s policies and food safety requirements.
Support residents to enjoy a positive mealtime experience.
Maintain a safe working environment and report any concerns or hazards.
Work as part of the wider care home team and contribute to a friendly, respectful and supportive atmosphere.

About You

The ideal candidate will be someone who takes pride in preparing good-quality home-cooked food and understands the importance of nutrition, dignity and choice in later life.

You should be:

Experienced in cooking for groups, ideally in a care home, school, nursery, hospital or similar setting.
Confident in preparing varied, nutritious meals.
Aware of food hygiene, allergens and special dietary requirements.
Organised, reliable and able to manage a busy kitchen.
Kind, patient and respectful towards older people.
Able to work independently and as part of a team.
Flexible and willing to work some weekends as required.

Essential Requirements

Previous catering or cooking experience.
Good understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety.
Ability to cater for special diets and modified textures.
Good communication and organisational skills.
A caring and respectful approach.
Food Hygiene Certificate, Level 2 or above.
Knowledge of IDDSI texture-modified diets or willingness to learn.
Understanding of nutrition and hydration needs for older people.
