Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced, dedicated and compassionate General Practice Nurse to join our busy and supportive primary care team.
The successful candidate will provide high-quality, patient-centred nursing care across a broad range of general practice services. You will work closely with GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team to support the delivery of safe, effective and evidence-based care, while promoting preventative health, supporting patients with long-term conditions and improving health outcomes within the community.
A minimum of 3 years’ proven experience working as a General Practice Nurse within a GP/primary care setting is an essential requirement for this position.
The ideal candidate will be confident working autonomously, have excellent clinical skills and demonstrate a compassionate and professional approach to patient care.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide safe, effective and evidence-based nursing care, including assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care.
- Undertake wound assessment, dressing and management, including the assessment and management of complex and chronic wounds.
- Perform phlebotomy/venepuncture for adults and, where appropriately trained and competent, children.
- Undertake cervical cytology (smear testing) in accordance with the national cervical screening programme.
- Carry out 6–8 week new baby checks and provide appropriate health, developmental and parenting advice to parents and carers.
- Conduct NHS Health Checks and general health screening, identifying health risks and providing appropriate advice and onward referral.
- Provide ongoing management and annual reviews for patients with long-term conditions, including diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension and coronary heart disease.
- Administer adult and childhood immunisations, including seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccination programmes, in accordance with current national guidance and practice protocols.
- Conduct travel health risk assessments and administer appropriate travel vaccinations within scope of competence.
- Provide contraceptive and sexual health advice within professional competence and scope of practice.
- Undertake ear irrigation and ear wax removal where appropriately trained and competent.
- Perform clinical observations and assessments, including monitoring vital signs and recognising changes in a patient's condition.
- Recognise and appropriately respond to deteriorating or acutely unwell patients, escalating concerns promptly to the appropriate clinician or emergency services.
- Administer medications and treatments safely and accurately in accordance with prescriptions, clinical guidelines and practice protocols.
- Provide patients with clear and appropriate information regarding their conditions, treatment plans, medication and self-management.
- Deliver health promotion and preventative healthcare advice, including smoking cessation, weight management and healthy lifestyle advice.
- Undertake chaperoning duties and provide clinical support to GPs and other healthcare professionals as required.
- Maintain accurate, comprehensive and confidential patient records in accordance with professional, legal and practice requirements.
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures, safeguarding requirements, information governance policies and clinical governance standards.
- Work collaboratively with GPs, nurses, healthcare assistants, administrative staff and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, practice meetings and continuing professional development.
Essential Requirements and Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ proven experience working as a General Practice Nurse in a GP/primary care setting.
- Current professional registration as a Registered Nurse with the appropriate professional body.
- Substantial experience working independently within a busy general practice environment.
- Demonstrable experience in cervical cytology/smear testing.
- Demonstrable experience undertaking 6–8 week new baby checks and providing appropriate parental advice.
- Proven experience delivering NHS Health Checks and general health screening.
- Experience managing patients with long-term conditions, including diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension and coronary heart disease.
- Proven experience in complex and chronic wound assessment and management.
- Competence and practical experience in phlebotomy/venepuncture.
- Experience administering adult and childhood immunisations, including flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
- Experience undertaking travel health assessments and travel vaccinations.
- Experience providing contraceptive and sexual health advice within scope of competence.
- Experience with ear irrigation and ear wax removal, where appropriately trained.
- Experience recognising and appropriately escalating deteriorating or acutely unwell patients.
- Experience providing chaperoning and clinical support to other clinicians.
- Experience delivering health promotion, including smoking cessation and weight management.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, common acute illnesses and long-term conditions encountered in primary care.
- Excellent clinical judgement and the ability to prioritise and manage a varied workload safely.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.
- A compassionate, professional and patient-centred approach to care.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong understanding of clinical governance, confidentiality, safeguarding, infection prevention and control, information governance and accurate clinical documentation.
