Full job description

We are looking for an experienced practitioner / room leader who has experience with looking after babies.

The role will require the practitioner to work with us for 40 hours per week.

Our opening hours are from 7:45am - 5:45pm, Monday - Friday.

About Piccolo Land’s Nursery & Preschool

We are opening a nursery provision and are looking for an experienced, passionate practitioner to lead our baby room and help shape an outstanding early years' environment from the ground up.

It is built on a simple but powerful belief: early years should be joyful, imaginative, and alive with possibility. Our approach blends high-quality childcare with music, storytelling, movement, arts and imaginative play, offering a warm, boutique alternative to traditional nurseries.

At the heart of Piccolo is our purpose-built role-play village, a richly designed environment where children learn through immersive storytelling, creative expression, music, movement and meaningful play. We believe children learn best when they are deeply engaged, emotionally connected and free to explore and our setting is designed to make that happen every single day.

This is not a traditional nursery.
It is a place where imagination leads learning.

Who We’re Looking For

We’re looking for a Level 3 qualified (or above) early years professional who:

has experience of looking after babies
believes play is powerful
values creativity as much as compliance
leads with warmth, confidence and curiosity
wants to help build something special from the ground up

This role is ideal for someone who is an experienced practitioner and is ready for a step up into a room leader role.

Role Purpose

The practitioner will be responsible for the baby room. The role ensures that all statutory requirements of the EYFS are met, babies are safe and thriving and families feel confident and well-informed.

This role is supported by Piccolo Land’s nursery manager who runs the day-to-day operations of the nursery.

Key Responsibilities of the Room Leader

Leadership & Management

Lead the daily operation of the nursery room
Support, mentor and supervise staff in the baby room
Foster a positive, professional and supportive team culture

Safeguarding & Welfare

Ensure safeguarding policies are followed
Maintain a safe, secure environment for children at all times
Oversee nappy changing, toileting and intimate care procedures
Ensure all risk assessments are completed, reviewed and followed
Manage accidents, incidents and concerns in line with policy

Curriculum & Quality of Care

Ensure delivery of the EYFS across your age group
Support other staff in planning age-appropriate, engaging activities
Embed Piccolo Land’s creative curriculum (music, movement, storytelling, role-play)
Observe, assess and support children’s development
Ensure inclusive practice and SEND support
Maintain high standards of care, learning and wellbeing

Operational & Compliance Responsibilities

Work with the Nursery manager to :

Maintain accurate records (children, staff, attendance, accidents, medication)
Ensure policies and procedures are followed and reviewed
Prepare for and support Ofsted inspections
Ensure food hygiene, health & safety and infection control standards are met
Liaise with external professionals where required
Ensure parental consent and documentation is up to date

Parent Partnership

Build warm, professional relationships with families
Lead settling-in processes
Communicate clearly with parents about children’s progress and wellbeing
Handle concerns or complaints sensitively and professionally
Promote Piccolo Land’s values and ethos

Essential Requirements

Level 3 qualification in Early Years / Childcare (or above)
Previous experience working in a nursery, preschool or early years setting
Strong understanding of the EYFS and safeguarding requirements
Paediatric First Aid
Enhanced DBS check
Confident communicator with parents and professionals
Calm, nurturing and organised approach

Desirable (but not essential)

Experience as a room leader
Experience supporting Ofsted inspections
SENCo training or experience
Interest in creative or play-based learning approaches
Experience helping to set up or develop a new provision
