Full job description

We are looking for team members who are passionate about nature, enjoy working for a charity, and take pride in contributing to projects that benefit both people and the planet. Life for a Life Memorial Forests is a UK charity dedicated to creating living memorials through the planting and care of trees. Our forests provide peaceful spaces for remembrance, support biodiversity, enhance green spaces, and benefit local communities.

The Role

This is a practical, site-based role focused on tree work, habitat management, and grounds maintenance. You’ll help ensure our memorial forests are accessible, well-maintained, and thriving ecosystems.

Salary: £27,976 pa (equivalent of £13.45 per hour).

Day-to-day work includes:

· Tree planting and aftercare (from young stock to medium sized trees)

· Preparing and planting memorial trees, supporting families during dedication ceremonies

· Grassland and meadow management

· Hedge work and seasonal pruning

· General woodland maintenance and site upkeep

· Installing and maintaining benches, memorials, and site features

· Using and maintaining tools and machinery safely

· Supporting volunteers and occasional community days

You’ll be working in spaces used by visiting families, so a calm, respectful approach is essential.

· Physically active, hands-on work

· Adapting to changing priorities due to weather, site needs, or visits

· A mix of independent working and being part of a small team

· Contributing to long-term woodland and environmental stewardship

What we’re looking for

This role will suit someone who:

· Has some forestry, countryside management, or land-based experience

· Is confident working outdoors in varied conditions

· Understands tree care, planting, and site maintenance basics

· Is practical, self-reliant, and takes pride in their work

· Can work steadily without constant supervision

· Is adaptable and able to adjust plans when priorities change

· Is comfortable interacting with members of the public, including in sensitive situations

You don’t need to be highly specialised, but you should already be comfortable in an outdoor working environment.

Essential Requirements

To be considered for this role, candidates must confirm that:

· Hold a full, clean manual driving licence

· Confident driving a medium wheelbase, high-roof van (Additional training available if required)

· You are comfortable towing a trailer for transporting machinery (Training can be provided)

· You can reliably travel to our yard in Royton, Oldham (typically 8am or 9am starts)

· You are willing to work a 5-out-of-7 working pattern, including regular weekends

· You are comfortable working outdoors in most weather conditions

Useful (but not essential)

· Forestry, arboriculture, or countryside management background

· Chainsaw tickets or similar qualifications

· Experience with grounds maintenance or habitat management

· Experience using machinery (mowers, strimmers, etc.)
