Full job description

Position: Waste Management Driver
Location: Stanley Industrial Estate, Skelmersdale, Lancashire, WN8 8EE
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Duration: 1+ Months
Working Hours: 36 hours per week
Pay Rate: £17.08 per hour

Job Responsibilities:

Operate refuse collection vehicles safely and in accordance with road traffic regulations and council procedures
Lead and supervise a small waste collection crew during daily rounds
Ensure efficient collection of household, commercial, and recyclable waste from designated routes
Support loading and unloading of waste materials as part of the collection team
Carry out pre-use vehicle checks and report any defects or maintenance issues promptly
Ensure all work is completed safely, following health and safety guidelines at all times
Provide direction and support to team members to ensure routes are completed on schedule
Maintain high standards of customer service when working in public areas
Assist with depot duties including vehicle cleaning and basic maintenance support
Complete basic paperwork and reporting related to collections and incidents

Person Specification:

Essential Experience:

Experience in waste management, refuse collection, or similar manual driving/operational role
Experience driving large vehicles (e.g. HGV or refuse vehicles) in a work environment
Experience working as part of a team in physically demanding outdoor conditions
Driving licence

Essential Skills & Knowledge:

Full valid driving licence appropriate for vehicle type (HGV entitlement if required)
Good understanding of health and safety in manual handling and vehicle operations
Ability to lead and coordinate a small team during operational work
Basic literacy and numeracy skills for reporting and documentation
Knowledge of waste collection procedures is desirable

Essential Behaviours:

Reliable, punctual, and able to work early starts and in all weather conditions
Strong team leadership and communication skills
Safety-conscious with a responsible attitude to vehicle operation and manual handling
Physically fit and able to undertake heavy manual work

Desirable:

CPC qualification (if applicable)
Experience working in local authority waste services
Knowledge of recycling and environmental waste practices
