Full job description

Kitchen Assistant / Junior Chef

About the RoleWe are a new and growing café in Oxted looking for a reliable and motivated Kitchen Assistant or Junior Chef to join our team.

This is a hands-on role with real responsibility from the start, alongside structured training to build your skills. Over time, you’ll be supported to take ownership of service, with the goal of confidently running kitchen shifts independently.

We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys cooking, takes pride in what they produce, and is excited to contribute ideas as the café grows.

Key Responsibilities

Assist with food preparation and support service during busy periods
Prepare and deliver consistent, high-quality café-style dishes as your skills develop
Maintain high standards of cleanliness, organisation, and food hygiene
Support stock management, deliveries, and kitchen organisation
Assist with opening and closing the kitchen
Work closely with other chefs and take on increasing responsibility during service
Contribute ideas for menu items, specials, and improvements over time

Development & Progression

Structured, on-the-job training from experienced chefs
Exposure to all aspects of running a café kitchen
Clear pathway to running service independently
Increasing responsibility as your skills and confidence grow

Requirements

Some kitchen experience or basic culinary knowledge (e.g. school, college, or short courses in cooking/food preparation)
A genuine passion for food, cooking, and developing new ideas
Willingness to take initiative and build responsibility quickly
Reliable, organised, and proactive
Positive attitude and strong team mindset
Food hygiene certificate (or willingness to obtain)

What We Offer

£12.71 per hour (21+) / £10.85 per hour (18–20)

Pay progression as you take on responsibility and move towards running service independently
