Pre School Manager Job Description

Job title: Pre School Manager

Responsible to: Pre School Committee

Purpose of the job: To manage the day to day activities of the pre-school. To provide safe, high quality education and care for young children. Develop strong relationships with parents/carers to ensure all children’s individual needs are met and to promote involvement in their child’s learning and development. To manage and support staff within the pre-school. To ensure all legal and statutory obligations are followed and met.

Safeguarding requirement

Holgate Pre school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and their families. It is a requirement of all staff that they share this commitment and follow the prescribed policy and procedures to continuously promote a culture of safeguarding across the whole organisation.

Main duties

To lead the planning of the curriculum using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum for guidance.
To ensure that children are kept safe, assessing risks and identifying signs of possible abuse, following safeguarding policy and procedure.
To take responsibility for ensuring that performance management systems are in place and followed e.g. induction, probation, supervision, team meetings, appraisals and objective setting.
To lead the pre-school, ensuring that checks are completed, areas are suitably staffed and policies, procedures and risk assessments are followed.
To help to set up the pre-school for the daily programme and to help tidy away at the end of the session, ensuring that all the resources and equipment are clean and safe at all times.
To act as a key person to a small group of children, liaising closely and building an effective relationship with parents/carers and ensuring each child's needs are recognised and met, completing learning journals and developmental reviews for key children and holding meetings with parents.
To have oversight of any special needs a child may have and ensure relevant play and learning plans are in place with the support of the setting SENCO.
To oversee areas of responsibility e.g. SENCO role and ensure that the requirements for that role are met and any necessary training is undertaken.
To work in partnership with parents/carers and other family members to support children’s individual needs.
To effectively supervise staff on a daily basis; to be responsible for monitoring the quality of teaching; to participate in staff supervision and appraisals and to identify training needs.
To be able to plan and lead a whole setting or small group outing, following the settings outing policy and other policies.
To promote children’s development in all areas, offering an appropriate level of support and stimulating play experiences.
To attend networks, information sessions and training courses as required and to take responsibility for your own CPD.
To keep completely confidential any information regarding the children, their families or other staff, which is acquired as part of the role.
To read and adhere to all the setting’s operational policies and procedures, e.g. health and safety, fire precautions, dropping off and collection of children, food safety, cleanliness of the setting etc, reviewing annually as a minimum.
To ensure that relevant records are kept and updated regularly.
To promote the pre-school to current parents potential customers and the wider community.
To undertake any other reasonable duties as directed by the Pre School Committee, in accordance with the pre-school’s business plan/objectives.

Person specification

Essential criteria

Full and relevant Level 3 early years education and childcare qualification.
At least 3 years previous experience of working with young children.
Sound knowledge of child development for children from birth to five years.
Knowledge of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) for group and school-based providers.
Knowledge of safeguarding procedures.
Good communication skills.
An understanding of play based approaches to children’s learning and development.
Commitment to equal opportunities.
Commitment to working effectively with young children and families.
Willingness to undertake training.
Friendly and flexible approach at work which facilitates the development of effective relationships.

Desirable criteria

Current First Aid at Work qualification.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and does require a criminal records check. Applicants must be prepared to disclose any convictions they may have and any orders which have been made against them.
