Garden Maintenance Operative (with Team Leader Progression Available)

Location: Knaresborough, HG5 0TG
Job Type: Full-time or Part-time | Permanent
Salary: £26,000 - £28,000 per year pro rata + performance bonuses
Expected Hours: Up to 40 hours per week

MR Landscape & Garden Maintenance Ltd is a respected Harrogate-based company specialising in the care and management of residential and commercial gardens. We are not a “mow and go” service — we take pride in horticulture, plant health, and creating outdoor spaces that clients genuinely enjoy. Our team is made up of people who value quality, craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of seeing a garden flourish.

We are now looking for passionate Garden Maintenance Operatives, with opportunities for progression into Team Leader roles for the right candidates.

The Role

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, has a genuine interest in gardening, and takes pride in delivering high standards. You will work as part of a small team (usually two people), carrying out a wide range of horticultural tasks across the seasons. For those with leadership potential, we offer a clear pathway into a Team Leader position.

Responsibilities

Cutting and maintaining lawns to a variety of finishes using different machines
Trimming and maintaining hedges
Caring for shrub and herbaceous borders, including weeding, planting, and pruning
Leaf-clearing and litter-picking
Assisting with planting schemes
Pressure washing
Lawn care treatments
Feeding, mulching, and soil improvement
Following annual maintenance plans
Working hours: 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday (hours vary with daylight; average up to 40 hours per week)

Requirements Essential

Alignment with the company’s values and commitment to quality
Clean/full UK driving licence
Experience working as part of a team
Previous gardening experience
Awareness of health & safety practices
Friendly, professional manner with clients
Competence using a wide range of horticultural machinery and powered tools
Creativity, attention to detail, and pride in your work
Willingness to learn and develop horticultural skills
Physically active and comfortable working in all weather conditions

Desirable

PA1/PA6 spray licence
Plant identification knowledge
Previous lawn care experience
Professional gardening experience
Horticultural qualifications
Tree surgery skills
Previous van driving experience

Do you have strong plant/care knowledge?
Do you hold any certificates related to garden maintenance, PA1/PA6, Chainsaw cross cut, Manual operating safety in Garden machinery, Horticulture L1,2,3,4 or any other related education/certificate?
Do you have a valid drivers licence for over 12-months with no more than 6-points and experience driving vans?
