JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Shift Leader (to be read in conjunction with the role of Care Support Worker)
Location: The Chantry (Crediton)
Responsible to: Our Clients/Care Home Manager
Qualifications: Minimum required NVQ level 3 in Health & Social Care, or 2 years extensive practical experience in an adult care setting

Purpose of Role:
· Leading a team of residential care staff to provide quality care for adults with learning disabilities, ensuring individual care plans are followed and risk assessments are maintained and reviewed
· Promoting the social and emotional wellbeing of our clients, and supporting with any safeguarding issues or allegations while on duty
· Ensuring an enriching environment is provided that incorporates day-to-day activities to support independence and the development of emotional skills
· Acting as a positive role model to the staff team, providing support during any incidents or issues, involving the wellbeing, safeguarding or behaviours of members of the team and our clients
· Maintaining effective contact with members of the team, family members and professionals
· Ensuring the medical and physical needs of clients are met, and keeping up to date with policies, procedures and legislation relevant to the care of our clients
· Ensuring a safe environment , checking equipment for problems, addressing health & safety issues, and delivering tasks on time
· Assist in managing the team to ensure the delivery of service is effective and efficient – ensuring everyone knows what they need to do at all times
As the Shift Leader you would assume the main responsibilities:
· Oversee operations and the team during your scheduled shifts
· Contribute to residents’ care planning and reviews by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care 6 month (or more frequently as necessary)
· Report, record, and take immediate appropriate action of any issues regarding staff, residents, relatives, or visitors
· Handling cash, administration tasks, signing off on daily checks as necessary
· Administer medication to residents. Administer, reports on and monitor individual’s medication. Order, store, record and dispose of medication safely
· Monitor residents’ weight and assist with follow up action as necessary
· Support the manager as required, reporting as necessary
· Attend mandatory training to include Moving & Handling, Health & Safety, Food Hygiene, Infection Control and First Aid – with specific training to meet the identified needs of our residents, eg Epilepsy, Diabetes, Autism, Dysphagia, Mental Health, Respiratory, and any other associated health issues
· Ensuring confidentiality is maintained at all times
To include day-to-day:
· Provide direction and feed back to the team during shifts
· Oversee mealtimes ensuring residents’ requests, dietary needs are catered for
· Schedule shifts and assign duties, delegating as necessary
· Effective hand overs at the start and end of each shift
· Decision-making to manage the rota, co-ordinating outings, healthy appointments etc
· Assist and support the care staff in the delivery of care to residents
· Train and coach new employees
· Sign off on hygiene, health & safety, and daily checks
· Inspect equipment and communicated the need for repairs or replacements to management
· Monitor and maintain the safety and security of the working environment
· Inspect bedrooms and communal areas for cleanliness
· Promote and ensure Health & Safety standards are followed for both the service, residents, and the team; minimise risks arising from emergencies
· Support residents to access and participate in recreational activities, and promote hobbies and interests
· Support residents to develop and main social networks in the Home and Community
· Awareness of employment law – specifically working time regulations
· Address complaints and report to management
· Assist in resolving conflict between members of the team
· Foster and maintain a positive workplace

Requirements:
- Minimum of NVQ/QCF Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or working towards it)
- Previous experience in a care role, ideally with some supervisory responsibilities
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Knowledge of CQC regulations and best practices in care delivery
- Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to undergo one)
